Final cut help

I'm having a bit of trouble exporting movies from final cut express. Whenever I export a video to a quicktime file it looks worse than what it should've looked like. Here are some examples and they've been colour corrected/graded,

I was wondering if anyone know why it does that and how it can be fixed?

Many thanks.

Although I am not 100% sure, this could be due to the unfortunately famous 'gamma shift bug'. Have a search for it. I am not 100% sure whether this is it, as the difference in the two is quite drastic.

Looks like that to me, too. Are you exporting in ProRes or h.264? If the latter, I'd put money on it being the gamma shift. Look into x.264. It's a different version of the h.264 that gives you more control over the gamma shift. It's supposed to be easy, but I couldn't get it to work. Everyone else has no trouble with it.

I export using H.264.

X.264 and ProRes aren't listed so there's nothing I can do about them.

Are there any other compression types that can rid the gamma shift?

Hi,

Sorry if I ask too many questions but how do I install or set up x.264?

I downloaded the codec but not sure what to do next.

Final Cut Express doesn't have the ProRes codec installed with it. Do you get the same problem when you use the "Export Movie" command rather than the "Export using QuickTime Settings" (I think those were the settings)? In the first case, it looks more like compression issue (all the banding in the dark areas). The second looks like a gamma shift. I remember that I had to change a setting in the old QuickTime movie player to play the movie at the correct gamma setting. Otherwise the image in FCE always looked darker than what was played. Don't know if that will help! Chris

I don't know because I didn't use "Export Movie" for the final video. However I did use it while the clips were raw and not colour corrected/graded. It didn't look very good; looked kind of dumbed down compared to what it should look like.

Can ProRes rid the compression issue/gamma shift if it was preinstalled on final cut express?

Sorry I didn't realize I wasn't getting email notifications. Did you figure out what the problem was? You could just get FCP X. Way better than FCP Express.
