Final Cut doesn't like when P2 timecode runs past 23:59:59:23

Okay, that's a stupidly long title, but I didn't want to throw up another "FCP P2 Import Problemzors!!!".

I did a multi-cam shoot for a concert, and we jam synced all cameras to TOD. The concert ran past midnight, as was expected, and we shot a lot, and all was well and good with our P2 offloads.

A few weeks later, I'm trying to import the footage into FCP, and all goes well until I get to the clips when the timecode rolled over from 11:59pm to midnight (00:00:00:00 on the timecode).

FCP just doesn't want to deal with this clip. It will play fine, but when it hits midnight on the TC, it just freezes. All is not really lost because I can still set in and out points and then import it blindly, but it's just a strange problem.

I suspect others have had this issue. Any fixes (besides using another program to ingest footage)?

hmm. interesting. I've never used final cut, so....

But, have you tried using Raylight for Mac?

You don't have to do any importing of footage, etc. You can just drop it straight on the timeline if you have this program installed and it keeps the metadata for you as well.

Maybe at least worth downloading the trial to see if it takes care of your issues before buying it. It's been a highly recommended tool to have by folks who use it anyways.

So you set the timecode initially at a negative number? If it rolled to all zeros that's what it sounds like. Usually one would start at a positive number so it would eventually roll over to 1:00:00:00. Maybe that's what FCP doesn't like.

No, we set the timecode to TOD, and when midnight rolled around, the HVX took time TC to zero. We didn't set it to a negative number. Although I suppose I'd have to check with my assist to make sure.

And I might have to check out Raylight. I've heard good things.
