Ok i just got final cut express and I have a macbook pro. why is it that every time I do something to the clip, no matter how small, I have to render it. I have been looking and people say that it is because the sequence settings dont fit the clip settings, but I dont know how to change that and make them the same. Please I need help!!!!

The sequence settings are under the sequence menu, just load the sequence preset that matches your capture preset.
And also, pretty much any effect you add to the clip will require a render, it depends on the effect though. Some of them will allow you to play back in full quality (you might get dropped frames though), some of them will allow you to play back with limited resolution, and some of them MUST be rendered first. But any time you change any video attributes (effects, basic motion, crop, distort, etc.), a render will be required at some point before exporting.

Thanks, but wat if I imported the video files from my mac as quicktime files. I'm still not sure exactly how to match the sequence with the clips. And I know it has to be rendered for export but should i have to render after every effect to just view the playback?

What are your sequence settings?

What are clip attributes?

This basic stuff, so you need to spend some time learning how to find what your sequence setting are.

That's pretty basic in FCE. Just look in the search pdf help menu.

You can then open that QT movie in the QT Pro player, and then choose Movie Inspector from the View menu and look at the format section.

when your clips are in the bin, you can see what the frame rate is. you need to make sure your sequence is set to have a matching frame rate. among other things, but that's a good start.

i know how to view the frame rate of the clips but every one tells me to open up a new sequence and match the setting. well when i go to sequence settings i dont really see any thing about setting framerate or anything. I dont see very many customizable options. I see timeline options and render control. The render control just allows me to put the frame rate and res at like 50% and watever.

once you start using a sequence you cant change the settings... so what you need to do is create a new project, and then before you do anything else, go to Sequence > Settings and you should be able to select the proper frame rate.

hope that helps...

Thanks for yalls help, but even if select File>new project then sequence>settings, cant change the sequence settings except for the stuff i talked about above.

If we know this, we might be able to assist.

Which cam did you shoot with?

Unfortunately FCE is very limited on sequence setting options. You have to find out what size and codec the original files are in q-time (apple i when it is open in q-time) and see if there is a preset available with the same settings in FCE. If there isnt, then in q-time you want to export the original videos to the correct format you need in FCE. Dont worry this wont effect the original file.

For example, your source videos are 720x480 h264 and you need them to be 720x480 dv-ntsc, you need to open the source in q-time. file > export > movie to q-time movie, under the video settings tab change the codec to dv-ntsc, export. You then bring the new file into FCE and it should work.
