Final Cut 6.0.x File - > Import -> Files ...

I just imported an .avi( from an Olympus PEN E-P1 camera ) file to FCP6 using this method: File -> Import -> Files ...

And the file plays, but only after waiting 5 mins for rendering.

Is there a way I can change the file to the native format of FCP; ProRes 422 or whatever its called?
I assume it’s possible, I tried CTRL + clicking the asset and choosing settings, but no go. So my question is really: How?

After I clicked  + 9, I can see that the current compressor is Apple OpenDML JPEG.
But I find no way to convert the asset/clip.

Is best practice to export via Compressor and reimport?

Try using FCP's Log and Transfer feature to import and transcode the files. If Log and Transfer doesn't recognize the files then you can use Compressor to transcode the files.

Or just open in QuickTime Player and export out to ProRes. You'll definitely not want to deal with this file type directly on your timeline in FCP.

Log and transfer only works with supported cameras- which I'd kinda doubt includes this one. Stick with the method I suggested. You can also set up a droplet in Compressor to do it automatically if you want to get fancy---http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXnUACOZ_Oc
