Filtering out a drive

I posted this on the Avid Forums as well, but never got a workable answer, so here goes....

I have 2 MC's. On both systems, each has a cheapo one TB FW400 drive for graphics, animations, exporting QTs, Photoshop files, Sorenson conversions, etc. For the price of these why clog up the video drives?

My freelance editors could care less where stuff gets rendered from the Avid. I go into the graphics drive [and the c: drive too] and there is both OMFI & MXF folders on both edit systems. It really doesnt hurt anything, although I do believe the FW400 drives do not have the thru put of the SCSI drives. Maybe Im nuts, but it drives me freakin crazy!

So, once a month I transfer all the FW400 clips to a SCSI drive, throw out the database files, then wait to edit- annoying!

Is there a way that I can 'turn off' these drives for rendering (take away the option completely) yet still be able to pull graphics from it, and export to it, when necessary? Thanks for helping save my sanity.

Yes.

Media Creation settings. You can choose to omit the launch drive from render list or filter a drive.

I have never tried but it should work.

Should, but didn't. It did allow for the C: drive to NOT come up in the render options, but the portable FW400 drive was still in the list, waitng to render to.

If you set up the Avid projects for your editors, then in the Media Creation settings, you can select which drive you'd like for rendering, and which one for digitizing, etc.

As far as completely prohibiting that drive from being written to, well I think you can change the read/write permissions on the drive itself. That would be something you'd do through the operating system, not through Avid. Otherwise, if you have all of your drives on an Avid Unity system, then it is quite easy to restrict drives from being written to.

Could & should set up the drives they can render to in media creation, but in many cases it defaults to the largest drive [on one of my avids that the fw400 drive] they hit enter and the rest is history.

Specifically how do you prohibit drives to be written to [I use local drives]? I tried, and must not have done it correctly.

[Someone also suggested unmounting the drive, wich works great but remounts the next time you boot-- and unfortunately 'site settings' will not keep this setting.]

For reference I just got a note back from Marianna [the forum Queen at Avid] and she said that this feature is often requested by users.....so Im guessing if there was an easy fix they would have made it posted it. But trudge on I must.
