What is the best filter to protect the lens from damaging (in other words which one does give the least reduction in transmittace since the HVX is not a low light performer to start with)?

UV filter is pretty much just a clear piece of glass. It's a standard lens protector, and it apparently does something (filters...) with uv rays, although i cant tell the difference with it on or off.

A UV filter or a protection filter will do. The important thing is the coating of the filter as flare and fog might be an issue on cheaper filters.

I bought the B+W 822MM UVA Filter for about $100. It works well.

You could always use a stack of ND8s as a lens cap
