Filmout questions!

I shall shoot a doc movie two weeks after. Unfortunately, I have no time to do filmout tests before shooting, what settings you can recommend? Maybe some shooting advices? should I under or overexpose?

Lucky guy to have a job like this !
To kick the ball off for you and make it somewhat easier for others who can comment and have experience that will be relevant -
what nle will you be using ?
what is your capture medium ? (p2? or fw to disk or to tape ?component outs to tape or to disk?)

Some of the questions you ask are dependant on your intended workflow ....
What does the transfer house want ? Are you really talking film or ...
Are you the man or the hired shooter ?

C'mon, Nickz - guys here who can help need some detail - pls ...

robbo, actually I don't know what NLE we will use, because there is no support for native 25p yet in any NLEs (I have PAL version of HVX). I don't want to edit with Cineform because of recompression, probably we'll wait for Edius 6 or FCP 6.
Capture medium is pair of 4GB P2's and notebook. I'll talk with filmhouse tomorrow, filmout should be done with ARRIlaser.

I'm not "hired" - this is not commercial project, director is friend of mine... so we doing it for own money :)

'kay - the only thing I can add is - you want to meet a director that is prepared to pay you ! lol
Hopefully someone else can help you further ...

cheers, r

Thanx Smelni, this was useful. What you can say about low-key footage? some of my pretty dark shots looks wonderful on lcd screen, but i'm not shure what will happen when the footage will be transferred to film.

first - and I mean this as it sounds - you can never ever ever EVER judge footage from the lcd screen - it is not color accurate and will look very forgiving - you need a production monitor or some soft even if it is an onboard lcd HD monitor

As for low key it will look great - just make sure you expose properly - low key shouldnt mean low light over the whole scene - so have highlights and expose for those

NickZ,
This is really missing the benefits of using a digital intermediate, plus missing out on 25p support. As you are wanting to do a film-out, I imagine you intend to color correct, maybe a little work in a compositing tool, adds some titles. All these benefit from not working in a native compressed format. Now if you are just going to capture, do no interim rendering to DVCPRO-HD, no composites and no tiltes, then export straight to DPX files for filmout, then you might have an mathematically advantage, but nothing a audience can see. Once you embrace a digtial intermediate you do your post at 1920x1080 or 1280x720 rather than the native DVCPRO-HD's lower resolutions of 1280x1080 and 960x720. All your post elements such and composites and titles can benefit from this resolution gain. All this plus the performance gains CineForm offers. Please give it a test drive.

Your real question should be that of LUTS. You will want to understand the gamma differences of Film vs Video. Film appears much darker etc. Talk to a your film out people immediatly. Find out who is going to do the color corrections. But as a rule of thumb, all well exposed images will give you the best results for them to work with. Try to avoid any color looks in camera. Make those adjustment in POST. Give them clean well exposed footage. When in doubt, light it up. Don't clip your whites! Watch your toes or you will get muddy looking footage that looks like bad video blown up.
