filmming Basketball

Hi,

Just got my dvx100a today, and i've been asked to film a basketball game. Not wanting to stuff it up, i was wondering if anyone could help.

It'll be filmmed from the stands (with the audience) but the stadium isn't that huge.

Now, i assume i should just shoot 50i (pal)......with that could i just use autofocus?
but i'm not sure what shutter speed.

please, any help what be very good.

I'll let others answer the shutter speed part...
but I would use a tripod or a monopod even in the stands.
I found I can never hold it steady enough for long shots.
If I use a tripod I just don't expand the legs and make it a
high enough to go over people's heads in front of me.

Autofocus will work quite well when shooting interlaced. For a basketball game with one camera your shot will be pretty wide most of the time...unless you're filming a specific player. So the camera should maintain focus quite well. Like Heisest said...tripod or monopod is a must.

Shutter speed will depend on the light available. Im not sure what your gunning for here, but 1/250th or 1/500th will give less motion blur and enable you to pull some crisp grabs, it will however give it a (cant remember the word) stratacco ? look. If you use autofocus you may get some soft focus in parts as the auto tries to follow the action on different parts of the court, I mean it doesnt know what to focus on.

If it were me I would shoot it: z00 MF65 Iris f4.8 - f6.8 (this should keep everything in focus). DO a manual white balance, if its indoor check for strobing on the lighting and use syncro scan to kill it. As I said I would try for 1/250th shutter speed but I doubt you will have the lights for it so maybe you can get away with 1/120th (either way it depends on light) I wouldnt open the iris to compensate. Other scene file settings up to you.
