Filmmaking Courses Online

Are these things worth it? I was going to get into one : www.filmschoolonline.com

But I thought I'd ask the film pros about it first, see if something like this is worth it. Would you ever consider taking Film courses online, you know just to pass the time while learning.

I checked out their site and it certainly affordable.(No more than the price of a good book) I really don't see how you could go wrong even if all of the information is available from other sources like this site. I ordered a couple of cd and dvd sets from "How to Make your Movie" and "Cyberfilmschool Online" and while most of the information is very basic you could spend more on a couple of good books. My advice take your camera and SHOOT! If you don't know the basics post your footage here and you'll get some of the best critiques available anywhere from people who know.

One thing that comes to me is that if your serious about filmmaking you should get information from everywhere and then weigh its value. I doubt they have anything on that site thats not available here for free but its no more expensive than a night at the movies. Let us know how it turns out.

Yeah, You're right. I liked that certificate program, I thought itd be a good way to show off and something to brag about before hitting a college and doing the actual thing, you know? But again, I'm sure its not an easy task.

Thanks for the reply.

That certificate would carry no weight. To take the program to learn some stuff is one thing. But to count on credentials is another.

I agree with dakotapod....I don't think I've ever known anybody in film to get hired on credentials. It's almost without exception word or mouth based on body of work.

Like they say, "the proof's in the pudding".

I've found some good, albeit basic info on http://www.cybercollege.com/tvp_ind.htm and it's FREE!

My philosophy is - Anything that'll give you more tools to do good work should be embraced. (Damn, that sounded WAY too philosophical:)) I say go for it, and get some books as the others suggested, AND just make a buncha films with some people who know what they're doing and you'll be in good shape.

In my opinion, experience out weighs film school. Just volunteer on a set and you will pick up so much. You can also save the money you would have spent on school to buy DVDs ( I think a much more valid use of the film education funds)
