Filmmaker: a diary by george lucas

In 1968, George Lucas made a documentary about Francis Ford Coppola, called Filmmaker.

  • It's a pretty good documentary, especially impressive that Lucas was a one-man crew wielding a 16mm film camera and Nagra sound recorder. Lucas first wanted to make movies like this --- small, experimental art films and documentaries.
  • By Lucas right out of school, about Coppola before The Godfather, even has shots of Gian-Carlo Coppola and Roman Coppola as children.
  • For some reason I like listening to Francis Ford Coppola. He's very articulate and seems to work through things by talking with others, unlike me who thinks about everything inside my head.

If you havn't seen, you may enjoy the Hollywood's Best Film Directors series - interviews with many directors including Lucas and Coppola (and of course they talk a bit about each other). It's available now on Netflix.
