Filming Welding

We potentially need to film a product video for a welders. The product is an accessory for welders that vacuums the smoke. I am concerned about the image sensors on the camera. We work with the HVX200. I was planning on using some ND as well as a polarizer filter to help protect the sensors. The product is an accessory for welders that vacuums the smoke. Any advice? Any other special precautions besides standing far away?

Thanks!

I'd start with the same protection that a welder requires for doing the work, that is shooting through the glass in the protective mask. Then if it's too dark, looking for equivalent neutral density filters that allow you to adjust the density.

what I did a few years ago, and it worked out well, is get an auto darkening welding helmet. and we built a little rig that mounted it on the end of the lens of my JVC HD110. It worked really well, and it also protected the lens and camera from weld splatter. The issue you have to work with is not just the Brighntess but also he very high levels of UV light given off by the Arc.

Yup. A UV filter for the camera is perhaps a good idea. And sunscreen for anyone exposed is absolutely a good idea. Train your people not to look at the arc (especially your camera operator); you don't want those kinds of injuries. Anyone who wears contact lenses should leave them at home. Finally, cover up -- sparks and hot flying bits leave nasty burns and destroy clothing in a hurry -- but better your clothes than your skin.
