filming straight up into the stars

I want to be able to capture stars in the sky behind the subject (camera pointing up low to the ground looking up at actor)

I think I have to achieve this with a green screen, because i'm figuring i will need to do time-lapse long exposures to get the sky visible, and then light the subject infront of greenscreen. (shots do not show feet)

I think this wont be too bad, but i'd like to hear what you guys would do for such a shot

thanks in advance!

You will only be able to do that by compositing it - stars require long, long exposures to capture.

You'd really want to watch for green spill, and maybe rim the subject with a bit of blue-ish light, if you're going for the standard hollywood-moonlight look. A decent sized screen (10x15 or 15x20 are standard cheapie eBay sizes, and those have worked great for me) and as far from the talent as possible. Don't forget markers if the camera moves, and if it does, test all of this, since the sky will move less than the subject due to parallax.

Don't overdo it with the stars - unless this is absolute wilderness, you just wouldn't see that many.

A little breeze on the talent's hair will go a long way to selling that it's outdoors.

I think one of the best ways to do greenscreen (for locked off or motion controlled shots) on things like this, is to go out to location, and film your actor on the greenscreen there, and then while the camera is on the tripod, just film the background while you're at it. This allows you to much more easily match the lighting to other shots in the same scene. Granted, this may be more difficult at night time due to having to light the green screen and the talent and all, but it's something to think about.
