Filming Sports

I'm going to be filming some high school football, and other sports, possibly, to put together something of a documentary/promotional video type thing for the school athletics program. I'm looking for sort of a Friday Night Lights effect, for those who have seen the movie, not a sports broadcast effect. So there will be closeups and music, etc. to dramatize it. What frame rate setting should I shoot in? It seems like 60i would be best both because the movement would be smoother and also the autofocus is more effective in 60i, but I prefer the look of 24p. Would 30p be the best compromise? What would you recommend?

30p would look good. You can slow 30p down to 80% I believe, and it actually becomes 24fps, with just a hint of slow motion. No one ever said you couldn't mix frame rates either. I shot alot of high school wrestling in 24p, with low master ped and high shutter speeds, and the look was awsome. It was really gritty and serious looking- just the look I was going for. You could go alot of routes tho....
