Filming paintball?

Anyone used their cameras to film paintballing?

What would you recommend for protection? I was thinking about just using a rain hoodie and a polarizer to protect my lense, but I'm not sure how that will hold in the long run. I don't want to spend too much money here.

I know someone that just used a pos camera, and ran out there, and shot the other stuff from a tripod far away. I would consider getting a Plexiglases sheet

Paintballs travel at well over 300fps. I wouldn't shoot it with a good camera.

MM got it right, use a camera you wouldn't mind getting hit, because most likely YOU WILL.

The markers they use these days are fully automatic, and can put out a hellacious amount of paint. ( I long for the days of pump-only games, but then again, I AM an old fart).

Also, wear plenty of padding!

Semi-auto is OK, but I agree -- the fully-auto beasts take a lot of the skill and technique out of the equation.

actually the full autos/ electropneumatic semi's dont hinder the game anymore. they did when everyone hsot on spyders, and mags and such, but now that eveery gun puts out he same hellacious amount of paint, its back to square 1, and its about tactics and skill again. believe me i almost went pro back in the day.... but college got in the way.

Also, if i were you, i would build a plywood box, with a thick 1/2" plexi face, and controll it from the remote controll. this way you can take the HVX in and its protected. just wratp it in plastic in side the box jsut incase some paint leaks in.

I'm thinking I might be able to get a custom plexiglass box built, with side room for my LCD to open and a slit for my hand in the back.

If they are over 300fps we turn them down. Me and my buds usually wear shorts and a shirt, lol.

I'm actually just getting back into paintball. I haven't played in four years until two weeks ago, and I've played both weekends since. I'm always looking for exciting things to shoot and I think running around with the hardcore players dressed like soldiers could make for some visually exciting footage (I'm thinking Children of Men here, hehe).

Maybe a dive housing? I'm not sure how they are for point-impact-resistance (can they take a hit?) .. a paintball doesn't really have *that* much energy that isn't dissapated by the paint bursting. It woudl also garuntee your camera was paint-free.

I have also used foam-core posterboard in the past as low cost "armour" to absorb the hit .. worked great with the pump & semi guns. Not sure how long it woudl hold under full auto (the foam breaks down with the impacts [as it absorbs the energy])

..yeah I would - Foamcore alone won't do it, but it's a great shock absorber against a stuctural housing.

And it you gover both sides in a coupel fo layers of duct-tape, then it will hold many a paintball.

Whatever you do, just be sure to test WITHOUT your camera in it first!

Paintballs would definately go through foamcore. My friend actually got shot with an Angel and the paintball actually pierced through the skin and lodged itself in his underarm. We were only wearing T-shirts and jeans so that part of his arm wasn't covered. But still, foamcores would definately not do it.

did you guys have a chronograph? if its piercing skin theres a problem.... and yes the problem with my angel, was i was shooting so fast, that i had like 20 paintballs in the air before the first one hit the target, so i fi nailed a guy with the first shot, by the time i stopped shooting, he had 20 more on the way. ouch.

if you didn't want some DIY protector thing, you could go for a nice used or broken underwater housing. they're really strong. probably not worth what you pay though.
