Filming in low light situation

I am filming a band that is currently on a major tour across the US and Canada... I am a friend of the band and have no experience with video cameras like the one we just purchased, the DVX100A. These are stadium shows with full production, but the band that I am with is the opener and so the light is very low for them. How can I set up the camera in 24P mode and still get good color and lighting on the film? Can anyone please point me in the right direction? We would all really appreciate it...

thanks a million

First of all try searching the forums. There should be plenty of threads concerning low light concert shooting.

Um.

The DVX100a isn't very good during low light situations so I guess my suggestion to you would be to shoot 60i and to forget about 24p. But... experiment when you get there. Maybe the lighting won't be so bad at certain shows. Get another camera, even a cheap one. If you're trying to shoot an entire song you will need a second camera for the edit.

Slower shutter speed = brighter

+Gain... but avoid if possible

Make sure you're color is good. White balance but take into account the lighting effects from the stage so you don't end up all reddish or something.

Apparantly you will have a few opportunities to film the band on stage. Don't forget to shoot them off stage too.

I recently shot a live gig...... very poor conditions, low light. Organiser gave me a lighting preview to set up to .. then decided to kill some lighting and add more reds so my set up was wrong. I tried to compensate.. rode the iris, used a very slow shutter speed... no gain. There was red lighting everywhere, I tried to compensate as much as possible. Ended up riding the iris a little too much over f16 ... the result is soft focus everywhere. Wasnt happy about the whole event.

Personally though Ben I wouldnt get a cheap crappy camera and mix the footage with that of the dvx.
