Filming headlights powering on at night?

I want to shoot a front scene of a BMW in a dark alley with the headlights off. I want to maintain focus as the headlights are powered on.

Any suggestions?

The focus shouldn't change. If you're camera's on autofocus and you're worried that the shift in light will throw it off for a second, put it on manual focus. Are you sure you're asking about focus and not exposure? Because you may run into an exposure problem depending on how you want things to look.

I agree with Armisiano, focus shouldn't be an issue, but exposure will. If the alley is really dark, and you expose to the car with the lights off, it will be over exposed when the lights come on. Try setting the exposure with the lights on instead, then shoot your scene. It will also help if the alley isn't completely dark when you shoot it.

Definitely ditch the autofocus.

If the exposure is an issue, and it's a locked down shot, shoot it twice, once at both exposure levels, and then composite the two.

yeah, your situation shouldnt have anything to do with focus...

question:
is your camera moving? if so, there isnt much you can do without manually controlling your iris remotely. and there are a number of external tools for that.
