Filming CU of a computer screen

I'm using the 24fp mode and I was able to set the synchro scan to almost entirely eliminate the scrolling black bar -- the problem is that the colors on the monitor are not vivid (still usable).

I've tried adjusting the color settings on the monitor a little, but I'm just guessing. Does anyone have any tips/tricks they use when filming computer monitors or TV screens?

Re: Filming CU of a computer screen

Have you tried white balancing to white on the computer screen itself? I'm not quite sure what you mean by "not vivid". Also, if you shoot a laptop screen (if available) instead of a standard monitor, you should not have a scan line problem anyway. Give us a little more specifics if you can.

Re: Filming CU of a computer screen

Try pulling up a website that has a white page such as www.yahoo.com for example. Do a white balance off that or any website with a white page. Make sure you shoot the monitor tight. Your colors should come out correct.

FYI: Just do the above is your going to be shooting a tight shot of the computer screen. If you pull back to a wide shot without white balancing your overall colors are going to be orange but the computer screen will still be correct. Now if you do a white on a piece of white paper on your desk then aim the camera at the computer screen your screen will now be blue but everything else in your room or location will be correct.

I am not sure how to get the correct color on the screen and the location your shooting at in a wide shot to all be a correct white balance in one shot.

When I shoot computer monitors or TV's at work with my ENG camera, I would switch my filter to #3 which is the filter I use for overcast days. Our DVX100 cameras just has 2 settings 3200K and 5600K.

While writing this post, I did the examples above and the colors came out fine with my computer monitor.

Re: Filming CU of a computer screen

You probably have to have the color temperature of the room light match the color temperature coming off the screen.

Re: Filming CU of a computer screen

This might not be a viable solution for you. but, you could try shooting a lcd monitor instead of a crt. the results might be more what your looking for.
