Filmconvert Profiles FS700 sLOG2 & 7Q sLOG2 finally available

thanks for the heads up, will have to try those.

Do you know if they profiled from the actual camera and 4K2HD Slogs or from the math of Slog2, i presume from the actual sources? Only reason is that these Slogs aren't really Slog as they have an additional curve on them. (Not that that's a problem, just don't assume what they are)

cheers

I have no idea, Paul. I just downloaded the profiles and opened FCP X to see if it works. Applying a film profile always creates a look not an accurate balanced image. In my eyes it's quite difficult to judge whether it's right or wrong, intended or by chance ;-) Nevertheless I like the FC look of Kodak 5207 at 50%. 7Q sLOG2 seems to crush the shadows a little more than Sony sLOG2

Interesting,

It's my belief that there are some issues with the nature of the Slog2 being produced, in terms of colour and curve. It's pretty easy to see that the Slog2 out of camera is a very tweaked log curve, it's contrastier than it should be. The LUTs provided follow suit, they're designed to match the camera produced output which is fair enough - as Gene has mentioned there are some issues with Red and i can't understand why there are still issues there. (In fact i'd argue that the red out of Slog isn't accurate either). These are small issues though, but depending on your workflow needing to fit into other systems they can be important. Hence whether filmconvert took an 'official' slog approach or mapped from some camera footage. I guess they did it from camera.

Running anything through BMC shouldn't give accurate results. The BMDFilm curve is not only a variation on the LogC curve (so you can't assume it is LogC) but also includes colour compensations for those particular cameras, so the colour will be off and in a way that isn't known (BM keep these details under wraps which IMHO is madness as it prevents anyone not using Resolve to jump through hoops using the material)

Again the AlexaLogC curve *shouldn't* work but it does produce good results. However this is expecting a LogC curve and you're feeding is some form of Slog. The LogC curve is a much truer version of a log curve, in fact Slog3 is very close to it.

Does it matter? It matters to me because of how i work with the footage in post/vfx. It may not matter to anyone else if they're eyeballing the results in grading.

Here a simple test, in Resolve compare the Slog2 camera AVCHD with a DNG that is interpreted as Rec709/Linear and then pop on a VFX LUT Linear -> Slog2. See the difference? I can confirm that VFX LUT is accurate - but that source linear data isn't quite correct. In fact take it through ACES and try the same thing with similar results. If you want an image that just looks like a great place to start. Swap into ACES, import the DNGs with a Camera 709 IDT (not CinemaDNG) and switch the interpretation to BMDFilm, it produces a lovely tonality and some great controlled colours. Of course it's not accurate but looks nice :)

As an example of how unpredictable Resolve is. That Rec709/Linear curve isn't even linear, they have a small S curve on it!!! WTF? To compare go Rec709/Rec709 -> Rec709 to Linear LUT, that's closer to what Linear really is...

(steps off and away from the soapbox now)

cheers

Shot in Prores 4K2HD, White Balance correct...

What happens if you switch to a generic source (sRGB) rather that Slog 7Q? Looks like a fundamental set up thing or bug, rather than a problem with your source file...

Just tried that, all great! Only happens in Slog2 (7Q). Every other profile shows "normal" hue.

EDIT: Yes I saw that, but it didnt look so apparent :)

I noticed today that CD seem to have uploaded new LUTs to their website (look under downloads) - new as of May 9th. Has anyone tried them?

I'm buying the 7Q/SLog once you tweak the red out. The other two work but no where near as close for me. However - subjective I know! Have also emailed support.

I did try them. I liked the proxy one a bit better than the other. They help but you still need to do a good amount of correction.

not yet, thanks for the hint! As I understand it's for RAW files in Resolve to create a sLog2 image - right?
