Film vs digital vs video?

I've been doing still photography for a long time. And I've also been around video for a long time. Now I'm trying to bring my knowlege up to date. In the old days there was a huge difference between "video" and "film". Almost like oil and water. But now that all formats are digital is there a difference any more? Sure a "video" camera captures a sequence of images. But is each frame any different from a frame captured by a digital still camera? Is it basically a resolution question? If I did frame grabs from a Red One and a 2k "video" camera and a digital still camera would I see any difference other than the obvious megapixel differences?

Thanks for your help.

Not sure what your asking, and what you mean that all formats are now digital? Maybe DSLR's have over thrown 35mm slr's in popularity, but there are many photographers still shooting medium and large format film. Same with motion photography, you will find there are TONS of people shooting HD, but many many people still shooting film.

With that aside, I know I'm going to get flamed for this but as a former Red owner; stills from a red and stills from a pro DSLR are night a day apart. Although Red's claim to fame is "RAW"- which it technically is, its no where near what you expect when shooting RAW with a DSLR. Its more like a video codec (with wavelet compression) where you can have set parameters to adjust in post- but not the flexibility you would expect when shooting RAW with a Dslr or other digital still camera.

Does that kinda answer the question?

Yes, Hunter -- thanks! That helps a lot. I am well versed in DSLR capture and post processing. I shoot professionally and use a Canon eos1ds II. I shoot mostly raw and post with Capture 1 software. So I am trying to find a way to correlate my current knowlege of still camera workflow with what's going on in the film/video world. I was hoping that there was a 1:1 relationship between digital video and digital stills, thus lessening my learning curve! But your comments about Red and raw tell me that I still have a lot of research to do! Thanks.
