Film Transfer Settings: Squeeze, 4x3 or Letterbox?

Hi,

I am shooting a feature that will be transferred to 35mm film. My question is: should I shoot in Squeeze mode, 4x3 or Letterbox?

I went through the posting of "uprezzing your footage" and I think Barry mentioned that its best to shoot letterbox for a film transfer (and I know hes the man), but it doesn't make sense to me, wouldn't you want to do a 4x3 or Squeeze for maximum resolution?

Dsjecta also recommended to have the detail levels high +5. I've read conflicting opinions that lower detail works better for film settings. Hmm...:-/

Please provide your opinion and knowledge on this matter. I'd like to finalize these settings so that my footage will be consistent throughout the whole shooting.

Thanks much!

Ask your transfer house for their recommended settings.

Detail generally is not wanted though for larger screen presentations, and squeeze most likely wouldn't be the best choice either. You'd let the transfer house uprez the footage rather than having the real-time in camera uprez, and THEN uprez it some more to the larger format.

cool thanks Mike. Yea, I've been learning that Squeeze probably isnt my best bet. I think I'll go with 4x3 from now on and let the transfer houses crop it for me.

lee,
ask your transfer house if they have mattes that you can put on your viewfinder or LCD for film transfer.
