Film Teaser

I think you should be able to cut down your 21min film into a cohesive 3-4min trailer and have it make sense.
I mean, you made a 21min short. Do you know how long 1hr drama's are on tv? 44 mins. A half-hour show is 22min with commercials, so that's what you basically made. If those editors can turn a 1hr drama or a 30min show into a 30sec spot, you should be able to do the same.
You asked for opinions on the trailer you cut, so why get all defensive? I'm just saying, it is possible, you just haven't tried.
Cheers,
Strauss.

Yeah, the film teaser just didn't interest me at all. I was bored, wondering "when's something going to happen?"

When there's a trailer with no talking or plot revealed whatsoever, either the images have to be vivid and beautiful and amazing, or full of action. Although the cinematography was nice, it wasn't enough to hold the trailer alone.

Especially since this is an "on the lot" entry, you need to tell them the storyline. Think of it as cutting the movie down into a shorter film, just in a trailer format (I think that's what everyone's been getting at, they're not asking you to make it in a 'film' format), with or without the ending.

Hi Loki

That's great your actually doing instead of talking about doing (Cough).

You have some nice shots in here. Is it entirely infeasable to shoot some filler material ? I'm not sure of what at thsi moment

I have no doubt the 21 Minute version makes plentey of sense, but if you could infuse some others shots into this trailer version to give the illusion of something else ....

As nice as it is looking; it is too much of the same footy IMO; 2 guys in woods, smoking a cigarette, gun, shovel, more woods .....

.02

Ill keep my fingers crossed for ya !

EP2005 captured what I felt but could not convey: "From watching the trailer: This movie is about a guy who kills someone and theres another guy who trys to stop him or figure out why he killed someone. to be honest, thats boring to me. i have no interest in finding out why anyone is being killed."

This is exactly what I felt! Everybody gets killed in movies. What makes yours special?

And then I read your plot and I believe that that IS interestng. But that wasn't conveyed in the trailer. I think you're being vague cause you don't want to be "on the nose" (just a guess) but that's what trailers are. They're there to tell you exactly what the movie is about. Or if they're a vague teaser, they have to be "vague interesting". I don't think your movie falls into that category. I think the plot needs to be explained.

Maybe drop a VO, like previously mentioned, of the guy saying "I killed [girlfriends' name]. What do I do?" And then all that stuff in the jungle makes a lot more sense. It would also be good to maybe get a pickup shot of the girl you could throw in there to make it clear for the audience (you could just use a picture. Don't need an actual girl) Your plot lends itself to a good flick.

Oh, and you seem pretty steadfast on not cutting a 5 minute film. Which is cool. But you might want to try just for the hell of it. It's not like trying to make a 5 min. verson will erase your 21 minute version or anything. Remember, James Cameron gawked when the studio told him he was going to have to lose 30 minutes of Aliens. "30 minutes? How the hell am I going to lose 30 minutes??" And then they cut out the entire reel of what was happening up on the planet before the marines got there. That movie turned out okay! If James Cameron figured out a way to do it, why can't you? :)

Anyway, good luck Loki.

So this goes against my principles on creating trailers for short films.. but... since my film is 21min... and I am entering it into "The Lot" I had to cut something together.

I am working on a longer edit as it is apparently required to a film and not just a trailer.. supposedly..

but I wanted to know if this does its job.. does it make you want to see the film?

let me know.

Teaser 2

Teaser 2 much improved. I like the shots but feel you could improve the piece with more continuity , more shots of other scenes, leading to a climax. (Good beginning...good end, need a flow in the middle) But very nice camera !and sound work. Thanks for sharingi

Nice work...great video and sound. Exciting, suspenseful...but I feel more continuity of shots in the middle would keep the interest better (Introduce other scenes and then finish with ending)

The whole thing takes place in the woods, so it is all going to look very similar in that respect.. lol..

Jim, when I start getting defensive, about it.. trust me.. you will know... and sure.. I can easily cut a trailer of the film...

but my concern is... and this is valid since the category I am entering.. is why would you or anyone want to see a longer version of the film after you basically just saw the truncated version?

I don't think I am a good enough editor to cut my own work down that much and still have people want to view the full film.

I should also mention I am going to intro the piece.. as required by the entry rules.

I am working on cutting a longer version and will post it when I can. Only a few days left so I am working on it.

c.g._eads, there is nothing special about my film. Nor is there anything special about 99% of the entries. Being realistic here, my film isn't an earth shattering piece of unique fiction, but it is a decently told story in its own right.

Maybe I should just bite the bullet and stop being a dumbass and just cut a 5 min version of it.... *dies a bit on the inside.

Thanks for the comments guys, check back soon I will have a new version of it up soon.

its good. i would like to see the longer version from what you cut. the long haired guy does a good job acting. i do want to see what he does and whether he takes his friend down or not. as pointed out above, why care about these people? your new cut makes me care about the long haired guy. he has that right sort of reaction , like oh wtf , you gotta be kidding me! real good work there with that.

thing to change? maybe only to leave out the one line in the beginning when they pop the trunk, " who's the guy?" because then it would seem really cool when the long haired guy says to the killer , " how come you didn't fill in the hole?" someone else is going in, obviously, but who? the long haired guy himself? maybe he was cheating with the killer's girlfriend? then you can bring out the other guy in the trunk, of course this whole line of thought is real friggin stupid since how can anyone miss a WHOLE PERSON in the trunk in the first place? maybe cut out the scene of anyone pulling anyone out of the trunk? i dunno, some thoughts out loud... not a big point in any case...

i liked it loki. good work. and good luck!

that a great idea actually... I am gonna run with it... and then claim I had thought of doing it that way all along..

;)

seriously though, I am gonna re-edit now.. and try that idea..

Just from a story viewpoint the last edit got my interest up. I want to know the whole story now. The original trailers didn't do that for me. Good acting too.
