Film Teaser - B&W!

thanks! i have spent *days* color-correcting my first feature film (color, tho) and i'm always the first to say that you can really achieve a pseudo-film look even with a miniDV camera like the DVX-100... also, nattress film effects for FinalCut = highly recommended :)
 
the frontal shot of the scooter was great, seems to be like a strobing going on though?...donno if that was the cc or what? looks good though, you can deffinely do some really good bw if you spend the time on it, I cant even beleive people just drop b/w filters on their stuff and call it a day....how you guys shoot the scooter shot...for the first short I did we shot a bike from the back of a pickup truck and station wagon and it worked fantastic, guessing you guys did the same kinda thing?


bad things I saw were some bad focus pulling in places on the closeups he goes out of focus in places and I wasnt to fond of that blur deal. to transiton from the scooter, didnt seem fitting with the older b/w film feel.

have you used magicbullet too or just natreess i have been told good thing about the nattress plugins as well never tried em though.

Very nice! I like the high contrast a lot. Did you simple desaturate and then adjust the contrast or did you create your own channel mix to produce black & white?


(I wish FCP had a curves tool.)

i know it's a silly little teaser, thrown together super quickly, but i really wanted to start working on the vespa footage, so this was the perfect excuse... (BTW i have about an hour of it... wide shots, medium shots, close-ups, a high angle from behind... will post more in the future...)

re: specifics about color correction: i worked mainly in after effects - desaturated the clip, then enhanced the contrast by 10%, blurred it by an infinitesimal percentage, and played around with levels & curves... then i re-imported it into final cut and applied the nattress film effects filter to it, adding a bit of a flicker (but i, too, realize that it might be a bit too much)

the flickering is kinda bad, Film doesnt flicker if you project it right....the whole adding the problems of film as fx to video never really seemed like a good idea to me...scratches,dust,sploches,faded contrast etc are bad....why put it on video....maybe if your doing like a little fx intro thing or something i donno but yea....to me the flickering in that looked accidental and was honestly just distracting.

look great. I also looked at your trailer to your first feature film. Im really impressed with the look. what was that shot with ? you did an great job with
color correction and costume design . I would love to see this film
 
Thanks Nathan!!! My first film "Dove Sei Tu" (90 min, Italy, 2005) was also shot with my DVX100A (trailer here: http://www.aseachange.com/media/reel_elena_doveseitu.mov) loooooooooove this camera.

Same story as for "N. de 7 a 5" - I color corrected "Dove Sei Tu" in AfterEffects, playing around with curves and levels... The film's editing was completed *AGES* ago but I have yet to find decent music/musicians to replace the original (copyrighted) music, so i suppose it's stalled for now...

I know it's off topic for this thread, but if anyone knows a site with royalty free music/mixes that are cheap, please shoot me an email!

I wonder if there are any articles out there on black & white cinematography for video... (i intend to shoot my film in color, anyway, and then turn it into B&W, just to have more choice...)

i ve made some stuffs in B&W with my dvx.
ive fisrtly tried color filters in front of my lense to darken skies and control skin color but quickly i ve used after effects plugins to work on colors before desaturating, that gives pretty good results without having to deal with filters on the cam.

the pic on the left is just normal desaturation and the right one is done by using a red filter before saturating (skin is brightened, sky is darkened (but here the sky was already very white in the color footage so it s not very noticeable) ) without loosing details in the rest of the image.

thanks for the feedback LD...

my biggest question mark regards the colors of costumes + interior design + exteriors, and their relation to the skin tone of people, etc... makeup, too (basically all aspects of mise en scene).

i suppose i will just have to study classical B&W cinematography (for film) and apply its rules to video...
 
As far as getting free music this is what I consider a gift from God. try it

1. get a "Myspace" account
2. click on "TOP ARTIST"
3. Select the genre of music you want.
4. look and listen to all the "Unsigned" artist
5. after finding a few you like send them messages about what your doing
and show them some of your work.
6. ask to be there "myspace friend"
7. explain and tell them they will receive film credit and how people in film festivals
will hear there music

this has worked wonders for me
