I thought this might be of interest. Not sure if this is the place to put it but...

"LOS ANGELES--Hollywood's major film studios are expected to announce on Wednesday that they have agreed to new technical standards that will make it easier for movie theaters to show digitally produced movies, according to two studio executives apprised of the announcement."

Yeah the future is coming, but it still will not be independent friendly. My bet is that, if you are not part of the "arraingment", your stuff will not get shown on the expensive projector. Only those that pay will play....

Same old story....

This should be a positive thing for people who want their movies to be seen in a theater on a big screen. No need for a film transfer anymore...

They reported this on NPR, and said expect at least a couple of years for the new projectors and infrastructure to come online.

Sigh.............
Why such a glim outlook, John? Honestly, when was the last time a print looked good to you>? I personally haven't noticed the high level of projectionist innacuracies and fowl ups, but others have, including yourself.

For a generation of projectionists practically raised on digital this and that, this should enable a welcome improvement to the quality of theatrically released motion pictures. And, yes, I believe it opens doors even further for independent filmmakers and local showings.. Well, certainly reduces the cost of a film print, at least.

:)

Uh... are we still waiting on this? I thought we'd all decided on forward-compatible D-ILA and DMD 2k projectors. Oh, wait... we're not deciding - Hollywood is.

...eventually

i like how they say 'piracy is a problem because of camcorder use' - it bothers me that people buy crappy video tapes (or dl them) and think it's the same thing as going to see a movie.

Your right Hybrid...going to the actual theater is soo much more fun than jus sittin on the computer chair waiting for people to download the movie from...I mean..you cant throw popcorn and skittles at people when your at home at your computer watchin the movie...it takes the joy out of goin out to the movies.

But what would really be crazy if some movie theaters went to the extent of putting metal detecters and stuff to see if people have cameras with them....could Hollywood issue something like that if they wanted to?
