Film modes

I have been shooting in the flat nostalgic settings that seem pretty standard here (reduced contrast, NR, and sharpness.)

Since I am doing almost no colour correction / sharpening in post at the moment it has just dawned on me that this might not be my best option.

If you knew that you wouldn't be doing any post processing other than editing - what settings have you found to give the nicest results?

just to let you know from my tests nostalgic seemed to reduce dynamic range by a wee bit. some people have reported the same for certain modes. I like how it looks but it seemeed smooth or standard had slightly higher dynamic range and better highlights than nostalgic

But you have to remember that just because you have a ton of dynamic range, doesn't mean you should use all of it. Most big movies limit total dynamic range on set through the use of lights/flags/scrims/etc unless they are doings some special effects with it.

It's totally distracting when too much range is used for every shot and it's detracting when people keep attempting to shoot in the darkest or brightest places possible just because their gear can handle it.

But that was somewhat circumstantial conclusion. I don't think nostalgic *causes* more banding, I think it just makes it more visible. Just like any other camera, you need to make sure you have adequate exposure and this banding generally shows up when grossly underexposed.
