film look plug-in

Back when I was using AE 5.5 I used to have a plugin for creating film looks, with it you could select your format and film stock from a huge list of presets then adjust how dirty the film was with scratches and hairs. Unfortunatly many years have passed since I last used it and I have no idea where I put the CD and I forgot the name of it.

Does anyone know the name of this plug-in, or know of a similar one that I can buy?

I'd say that you probably mean Magic Bullet looks

Was it FilmFX by any chance? I used this with AE 5.5/6 and sounds like what you are describing. I purchased it at www.bigfx.com and I recall it was a bargain compared to other like plug-ins.

I think it might have been Cinelook. Thanks everyone, ill checkout all the ones listed because I am sure they have improved alot since those days lol.

what exactly do all of these film-look plugins pretend to do? Do they desaturate and add scratches?

I'm only curious because, well... video has on average 5 stops of latitude, and film can have up to 14. What can post production plug ins do to counteract the drastic differences in the two mediums?

Film-Look plugins don't do anything in terms of latitude. You're expected to have the proper exposure levels when you record. They just change the look and feel of your footage.

I didn't mean to imply that a film look plugin would correct exposure. I'm saying that because film's latitude is so much stronger you can naturally see more in the image, and that there really isn't much a videographer can do to match that beyond surface corrections with color and framerate.

Did that make any sense? I'm not sure if I'm explaining myself correctly.

Yes, it makes sense. I didn't mean to correct exposure, I meant if everything in the frame was within the boundaries of a video camera's latitude, then the flim vs. video latitude thing isn't even a question.
