Hello,

Im buying new euipment to shoot an indie film, and wanted to ask someone that may know a little more than i do if Im making the right choices. For editing the film and im getting a G5 dual 2.7 with final cut pro which should give me everything I need as far as production and as far as the camera , can someone direct me or tell me which one to get to get the closest to a film look under 10000$ . Based on what ive been reading im gearing more towards the new Panasonic everyone is raving about or should I go with Sony?? Id appreciate any info someone can shoot my way.

a) For under 10k and you want to look like film - rent a film camera and dp for 3-4 weeks
b) No cam under 10k looks like film - except film
c) SDX900 looks pretty good - for 25k
d) Cams under 10k can look "good" but it won't look just like film - you could find a used Sony 500 for maybe 10k..
e) Find someone that knows more about cams before you drop the check

Well, Zig, I think the key word here is "film like". The DVX and XL2 are much more film like than many other cameras out there, for under 10G's. No body knows what the HVX looks like yet, but if looking at the DVX is any indication, this camera will be much more "film like" than most other cameras even twice it's price.
It is important to research and experiment, like zig said, if you want the ultimate film look, shooting film is the way to go, however not nearly as necesary as it was 5 years ago. Most films shot on the DVX or XL2, if lit correctly and shot with an expeienced DP will fool 95% of it's viewers into thinking it is film. The new flock of 24p HD cameras is sure to gain similar recognition.

but also, it's a subjective matter. the look of digital film is the new film-look. i think we're already there and used to the look of 24p. it's truly unique and something to get into. soon, the look of film will be dead and ovrerrated. i love the look of DVX- it's got a certain asthetic quality to it. and i think it's got alot to do with lens but the overall feel is the same with all 24p cams. now i say all this knowing that some digital films just lack a good production value. if you know your lighting then you should be able to acheive the look you want. think about it more and make a decision whether you want to do most with what 24p offers or just like Zig says, shoot film.

I've worked on some amazing projects with the varicam, and as many know Rodriguez and Lucas shoot HD and most filmgoers think they're watching film.

Granted, these are very expensive cameras, but so were cellphones and computers at one time, and now everyone has one, even small children. Soon we'll all be shooting films with quality HD "film-like" look and the HVX200 will be the first step to getting us there.

Bear in mind that the image on a computer is far more video looking than the actual film on screen if you fo film out - but that is very expensive as well.
