Film like image!

Robbie Comeau

Como's back. back again
Hey guys, I recently made a go karting montage for my friend as seen here:

But when I made it, and looked at it after, I thought i had a couple of "film like" images...The most close i have ever gotten!! Exposure DOES really matter if you want a film look. Its a pretty basic still. color temp -3, b.press, 24pA, everything else pretty much at 0. I added a blueish tint in final cut, and brought down the highlights a tad!...Take a look!

And this one, I think it is the first time i have ever gotten everything proprerly exposed. I was saying a couple days ago that when the sky is properly exposed, everything else is to dark, but it worked amazing here!

OH Luis, althought I hate your picture so much because it's scary, you really truly are a nice guy :):):)

Aha, now can you critique those images? I mean, isn't there ALWAYS something to critique about?

very cool man. Great images! Only a few of them were over exposed, but maybe you were going for that.

Using 1/20th shutter? It had nice motion, great for action scenes ( which i will take note ).

lol sorry, i guess the number 5 didnt make it in there. haha

i meant 1/250th. But 120 does look nice.

Were you doing the higher speed stuff or more static shots at 1/500th?

You know what PaPa, it WAS 250. Some were 120, and like 2 or 3 shots were 1/500...But mostly 1/250 lol.

Can you explain what static shots are? I kinda just played around with the high shutters

Cool, did you by chance use Film Magic Pro in AE for CC? Some of the shots looked FMP-ish, lol.

Good editing, I liked it alot. I never thought that death metal and go karts could mix, but hey... I was wrong lol.

No, l ike i said, i used final cut and added a little bit of a blue tint thats IT! lol...I just had the exposure set nice

Great shooting,

maybe you don't get comments because you are doing stellar job and people are trying to catch up, or just enjoying it for its merits...

one question though,

what do you mean by exposure set "nice?" did you use a light meter, or what?
just trying to grasp the "set nice" part

Hey pharpsied. I meant that my exposure was realyl set well. Since i had my shutter speed at around 1/120, and my ND filter on 1/8, i just played with my iris until i got it right.

cool,
I find myself worrying too much about the technical... thanks for showing me the value of shooting vs. reading

A few things stood out for me. Not all positive, I'm afraid.

The two main things that keep it from attaining a professional level are composition and lighting.

First, the composition is weak. The car is so far at the left of the screen that it creates a screen tangent, and the right of the image is just empty space. There are no foreground elements to balance it out and there is no selective focus.

Secondly, the lighting is flat. When you shoot, do it in late afternoon when the sun isn't in the middle of the sky, so there is some definition on everything.

If I were you, I would really concentrate on getting a good composition before worrying about the technical stuff.
