I am a college student, i have shot two films now. I have some extra money saved up and i want to spend around 3000 tops–i was wondering what i should get as far as equipment: a 35mm lens? boom mic? dolly? i am pretty new to all this. I have a HPX170. Lemme know, thanks.

Tripod
Audio gear
Lights (third because you can always shoot outdoors in daylight)
35mm lens

In that order. In my opinion anyway.

How's he going to put a 35mm lens on an HPX170?

A good tripod is an excellent recommendation depending on what he wants to do.

For $3000 tops, you can get both a tripod with fluid head, and some upgraded audio gear.

in fact, you could get a good tripod kit for about $400, plus a Rode NTG3 with blimp and pole for about $900. Factoring for shipping, that leaves you about $1500 +/-. You could even get a Sound Devices 302 mixer and still be within your budget (wireless mic systems can always be rented). Of course, you would need to add in the breakaway ENG snake for mixer-to-camera, and a good set of headphones if you don't already have them. But still, this would make a great start.

I agree that the lighting kit would rank below the above items. As for the 35mm lens... you have to have a 35mm adapter to go with it, and the whole setup can be pricey (you'd need to add a rails system and matte box and a few other items). But 35mm adapter rigs shouldn't be a high priority for you. Focus on getting a clean image and clean sound first.

I second what C2V said but I think you should get a Sign ENG-44 mixer for ~$530 & instead of a light kit buy 2 or 3 sennheiser g2 systems (only $420 until January), that should put you at right around $3000 with some kick ass sound and a good tripod

Only challenge there is that you're cheaping out on the mixer to start. That's going to cost in the long run. The SD has much better pre-amps (crucial for good audio) and will hold up, and will hold its value, over time.

IMHO, I think this is the most important order....
Audio,
Tripod,
Lights
wide angle lens
35mm adaptor
dolly
jib
etc...
