Film Contest. You be the judges.

So there was this short film contest for a church in MN and i entered.
The Rules were this: 5 mins max and christian theme.

Mine: http://youtube.com/watch?v=s3l1OoqkRdQ

Winners: http://youtube.com/watch?v=etq2HG1-ct8&feature=related

The winner was from that church so everyone knew him. He spent more time editing than me, but i dont think his verse ties in with his film well. you tell me who you think should have won. I shot it with my Dvx100b and i think he used a sony handycam.

First off - both were almost on par in terms of production value.
So hats off to you for getting it done, together, and submitted.

That said - I have to be honest, I found the winning video more engaging.
Both dragged a bit - but I found myself more engrossed in the winning video - the editing was definitely smoother, and made a lot of the difference.
On top of that, its biggest difference is that it has one storyline running through it that kept me engaged - with only 5 minutes of time, jumping from person to person in your video I felt like I was starting over everytime - and it didn't really develop much. I kept waiting to those 'stories' to intersect or intertwine somehow. It doesn't leave much for an audience to hold on to, so it winds up feeling like five unrelated minute long pieces, instead of one cohesive 5 minute piece.

But - I'll say this - I'll take Dvotchka and the Pixies over that music in the other video any day.
:)

I have a very slow connection speed so I cannot view it.

However, expensive camera does not equate to better production design. If you know how to work the camera, how to light, and so on....a little sony handicam can produce a good result. Story is what matters. Picture is just something special. :)

I've taken the time to watch both movies. While you had some nice images, I didn't think you did a very good job of actually telling a story. It was very disconnected and didn't actually go anywhere. I have to agree with what Luis had to say. Another thing that was kind of troubling was your use of copyrighted music. Did you get clearances? Now is the time for you to start concerning yourself about such things if you are serious about filmmaking.

On the winning entry, I was a bit more engaged but I did have problems with the way they bounced between B&W and color (colour for our European friends ) and a couple of times the format matte changes...a bit jarring. It really felt more like a music video than a narrative story though.

My advice would be to come up with a stronger story that has some sort of through thread that we can follow.
