Filling the TV screen

Sorry if I have missed this in my search but I couldn't find an answer.

I am just beginning my first project shooting in squeeze mode and in my first test I shot a few minutes just to capture in Vegas 7 and burn to DVD in Architect so I could see the results. In Vegas I have set the project properties to use template NTSC DV Widescreen 720 X 480.

The resulting DVD image is correct in aspect but the image does not fill the screen of my TV. I assume that I have missed something but I haven't been able to find an answer yet so I thought I would ask here.

Thanks

If you TV's aspect ratio doesn't match the aspect ratio of your footage, then it is impossible to make the video "fill the screen" while maintining it's aspect ratio.

It's like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. The only way it will fit is by making it smaller, or by changing it's shape.

Or you can choose to cut off the edges of your 16:9 video to make it'a 4:3 picture (just like you can round off the corners of the square peg) but then you are loosing material.

Do you mean there are black bars at the top and bottom of the screen?

I assume this is a standard, non-widescreen TV. What you're seeing is normal. The picture is wider than the screen can display, so there's no other way to get the full picture on the screen without distorting its shape.

If you want, you can set your DVD player to "pan and scan," and it will be full-screen, but you'll be losing the picture information on the sides of the image.

Thanks for the responses but I guess I was not very clear sorry.
My TV is wide screen and the DVD image aspect is correct.

When viewing what I see is sort of a box within a box. The image just doesn't extend to any of the four sides. It is just perfectly centered on the screen.

OK, then two things could have gone wrong:

1) You didn't export from Vegas as widescreen. Use one of the DVD Architect Widescreen templates under MPEG-2.

2) You didn't set your project properties in DVDA to be Widescreen.

Mikko - they look great and fill the screen completely, thanks.

David - I'll check it out tonight, thanks for the help.
