Fill in audio track on FCP 7?

I have some video clips on the timeline that have audio only on the RH stereo track. They are not the original prores files, so panning left doesn't work, neither does unchecking "make stereo pair". I need to fill in the left track with a duplicate of the RH track. Any idea how thats done in FCP7?

FCP can convert it to a single-channel mono file, which is automatically panned to center. It's quick and easy but I can't explain off-hand how to.

It should make no difference at all what codec the video is. The only reason I qualify that with a "should" is because Apples "prosumer" orientation with FCP makes them do some things in ways that make pros rip their hair out.

Worst case you should be able to un link the audio from the video, delete the empty track (you may have to un link the two audio tracks also?) and then relink the mono audio to the video clip. Assuming you need them linked.

"Make stereo pair" is going to be the linking of the two audio clips as a "stereo" file. That is what you probably need to un check so you can delete the blank one.

BTW these are not stereo files, they are mono and you are trying to duplicate one. They will still be mono when you are done just on two tracks.

When I get OMF's from editors the first thing I do is to go through all the production tracks with a phase meter and delete the dual mono duplicates. So from my perspective I would much rather you go to one channel mono clips and pan them center.

... you should be able to un link the audio from the video...

That's the missing piece, I believe. Highlight the clip and hit CMD+L. That'll unlink the audio from the video. THEN, you should be able to highlight the audio and hit OPTION+L to unlink the stereo pair (or, highlight, then go to Modify>Stereo Pair and deselect). Delete the extra audio track, then open the other in the viewer and set the Pan to 0 (it'll be -1 or 1, depending on which track you kept).

EDIT: Moving this from Audio to the Final Cut Studio forum.
