File size difference on capture

Hey all,

Shot something DV and would like to capture it through my Mojo SDI, would like to know the difference between DV25 and 1:1 MXF. The resolution reads the same, but the file size of the 1:1 is bigger. What is this difference in the file? Color depth? Does it matter? Would I want this extra info?

Sorry for the vague questions but never had to choose between the two, pros and cons would be good. Any questions on where my final will end up ask me and I'll post.

Thank again all,

T

DV25 is heavily compressed at a 1 to 5 ratio. It only has a 4:1:1 color space. MXF 1:1 is uncompressed with a 4:2:2 color space. If you convert your DV25 to 1:1, it will greatly increase the file size. It will not, however, add any new resolution to your material.

The only reason to work in MXF 1:1 when you have DV25 source material is if you plan to do color correction, effects, and to add graphics in the Avid. Even in this case, I think you can digitize at DV25, it's just that when you render or do a video mixdown, you should do that at 1:1 MXF. The increased colorspace and resolution of the 1:1 rendered image will be quite noticable when compared to a DV25 rendered image.

So, to reiterate, digitize at DV25 and render and mixdown at 1:1.

Because you shot it on a format comressed at 5:1 in a 4:1:1 space, you can bring it in at DV25 as a clone. Bringing miniDV in at 1:1 only makes the file bigger.
