File Number Reset

This might be a simple setting that I am missing, but how can I have the file numbers (name) continue even after I delete all. For example, when I format my Nikon then take more pictures, the file number continues. I don't know if the GH-1 has something like that but every time I either "delete all" or format the card my file numbers are back to 0000.mts. I could just manually delete all of the files and leave the last one, but that could get time consuming when I have a lot of files.
So just wanted to ask if anyone knows how to do this. Thanks.

Your question/issue is not new (unfortunately.) The GH1 does not behave like other cameras in that it does not store the last image number in its ROM. So it restarts with 0 every time you put in a new/blank card or reformat.

This means you will get duplicate file names every time you reformat a card or put in a new one. Which is annoying for sure. My old Sony R1 didn't create a duplicate image number until I had taken 10,000 pics.

The problem is actually worse because if you shoot both stills & video like I do, even though the "Reset No." menu function creates a new folder for the still images, all the video is put into the same folder no matter what. So separating a day's or subject's stills & videos requires looking at the date/time stamp of the video files.

Grrrrrrrrrr.

Thanks for the reply, even though its bad news. Yeah I'm used to my Nikon keeping the last file number. It makes it so much easier. I guess I was hoping the GH1 would do the same. Thanks though.

I asked Panasonic about this and they said that the software included with the camera has a function to rename the video files when transferring them to a computer. Never tried it so I can't confirm.

The reason the video files reset to 00000.MTS is because they're conforming to the AVCHD folder and file structure so you can burn the files out of the camera to DVD media and play them in a Blu-ray player. If the files on the disc started with, say, 00059.MTS then there's a chance the player wouldn't be able to find it since it's looking for the first file called 00000.MTS.

I could understand that. I guess they are trying to appeal to the "normal" consumer. I can always just rename the files manually, or just keep the last clip and delete it when I shoot another.
Thanks for the info Satsuei.
