If you record HD on your camera, and then have a Edius SD project, it will look softer. HD is sharper than SD. It's best to edit in HD, make a HQ video file, and then use TMpeg4 or 5 for encoding to a SD file for DVD.
You're better off upgrading to Edius 6.51. Cuts smooth in AVC. Also, HD to SD conversion is better in 6.51.

I think Eduis 5.51 handles AVC Intra 100 and 50. No need to upgrade to 6.5 unless it has some other features that you need.
Yes Edius 5.5x imports AVCIntra natively fine as I use it myself. If the original poster is importing HD into Edius but using a SD project, the screen will look soft as He's looking at a low rez window on a hi-rez computer monitor. When I've done the same as the OP my file viewer window looks soft but the disc image is fine.
The OP didnt say if he was trying to burn to disk or to a file? If he's going to file then I'd import to a 1080 25p (or 50i if shot in Interlace) project, edit away then export to SD.
If exporting to disk then Edius 5.5x is a little quirky, yes you can import to a Pal SD project, edit in soft looking windows and burn to disk.
One think I havent tried ( as I hardly ever use disks) is if imported using 1080 50i project, when on the disk burner screen you can select BD or SD disk. Maybe that could be used?

To produce SD-DVDs I "print" the finished HD project in Edius 5.51 as a "lossless" file then bring it into Tmpge4 for encoding to mpeg2. Looks fantastic compared to encoding inside Edius. I heard that in Edius 6.0 and higher the quality is much improved without having to go to an external encoding program.
