Field Sound Equipment

What would be a solid field sound recorder recommended for use with the HVX 200 and/or separate from the camera itself?

I've run into...

HHB Portadat with Timecode
Tascam DA-P1 Field DAT Recorder
Sony PCM - 7030

i see these things running from a couple hundred bucks to thousands. I have a shotgun mic and boom already. What best to go with?

Thanks!

the best field recorders are made by sound devices try the 722 they come up on ebay every now and then for around $1500-$2000 a little expensive but they are the best and also hold there retail value

Awesome.

Thank you,

How difficult is it to sync time code with the HVX 200 and edit in Avid's Express Studio. I'll find out first hand in the next month or so, but was curious ONLY cause I'm not entirely sold in the AVID product.

Appreciate the opinions.

The cheapest way to sync timecode between an HVX 200 and a non-time code digital recorder like a Sound Devices 722/702 is actually pretty simple. Always record with your camera mic on. When you clap the slate, it will create an easy sound for you to manually sync up in post with the clap that your 722 will record as well. Essentially, you will be importing your video, and syncing with the audio from your 722/702 recorder. It's a bit crude, but it works.

The Sound Devices 722 or 702 are great, because they physically have higher quality XLR inputs than the ones built onto your camera (or any other digital camera on the market.) You can record at 24 bit/192khz audio which is far superior than a DAT 16bit/48khz.

The difference between the 722 and 702 is that: The 722 is built with an internal 40 gb hard drive. Or you can use flash memory. The 702 is flash memory only, and has no moving parts.

The 744 has 4 tracks of audio w/hard drive and flash memory.
