field mixer-which one? please chime in.

shooting on a canon 7d-using a boom mic with a sen. me66- and im using a wireless mic for the actor also....gonna record to a zoom h4n..so im gonna run thru mics thru it thru a field mixer with preamps...looking at these 2 preamp field mixers .any thought s on the ses mixers, have u used it before, will it be the right one for my set up. thanks for the info in advance...seriously what would we do with out the internet.

I bought this one used for $350 from a sound guy upgrading so he had made all the necessary settings. I'm not sure what but he told me to never stick a screwdriver in a little hole...
I get great clean sound with Rode NTG-2 and Oktava mics with similar set up you have and of course go into camera to adjust settings as well. It's very tough and use it with a shure velcro bag.

any sound devices mixer will do you fine.

however, if you go fp24 or mixpre route you will need to get padded cables to go from mixer to recorder. those 2 mixers outputs cannot be adjusted and they are line level, the h4n's xlr's are mic level. you can call up trew audio or any other audio place and they can make you 2 custom cables for around $30/each or you can buy pads to go in between two cables. the pads cost as much as having trew make 2 cables, so better just to go that route.

the 302, 442, 552 all have adjustable outputs so you won't have to jump through that hoop with those mixers.

and just because you're shooting with a dslr does not change any audio situation. you'll get much more informed answers if you post in the audio section.

got it. ive also read to not use the h4n but instead the h4, reason being is that the h4n pre amps interfere with the preamps i would have on my mixer..which is why i was refereed to using the h4 which has no pre amps. do u find this true also. thanks

they both have pre-amps that can be turned off in the menu. the h4n's were "improved" but i've heard many users complain of them. also, they are a huge battery suck, and with that battery suck comes audio quality problems, especially in the h4n. just turn off the phantom power and you won't have a problem. i had an h4 for a brief amount of time but always used my mixers power so i can't comment on its preamps.
