field mixer questions

Walter, you make it sound like I've never seen a microphone or something?

No I think you just seem to take things too personally.

This mic looks and works perfectly fine for me and the three mics you show are not the mics that the Senheisser uses. They are Snaken which are thinner but the exact same length (1.6mm) as the mics you question. Here is the mic.

It's the one next to the tram and slightly bigger. Next to that is a smaller Senheisser and next to that a Sony. None are a Countryman B6 or Isomax which is about as small as you get:

Yea the B6 is as big as trams cable is.

Used the "giant" Sennheiser today on a network show and they look no worse than a tram mic or a Sony. Guess some folks are into size over what works. Are there smaller mics, yea but who cares? I don't hang them in front of peoples faces, only on their clothes and 99% of the time not even in the shot.

So as I said, it's like a tram, at least the body is the same length as a tram only round and slightly narrower than the trams wide angle. Here is another shot next to the tram. Nothing so terrible about this mic to me.

Cool. That's a different mic than I tried.. That one looks very nice. The one I used was a round ball shaped microphone. I wish I knew the model number. I was told that it was the "standard" mic included with the Evolution kit.. Maybe it was a G1 kit or something.. Glad to see we're on the same page now. You're absolutely right that mic is about the same size as a Tram/Sonotrim lav. Sorry for the confusion. Thanks, Brian

Think you might have the ME3. The cardiod mic that you can get with Sennheiser.
It's literally like a small ball bearing at the end of the wire?

Hmm, I'm not thinking it was a cardioid. It was a system I used a little bit in November. Didn't belong to me and I don't recall the exact model number of the mic. It was an omni, I believe. It was enormous. I'd say about the diameter of an ECM-44B lav. Except it was round like a ball shape. I thought it was the standard included mic with the Evolution system. Guess not. Thanks, though.

if i track this correctly the sound from the humble sennheiser is acceptable at a network level that is fanatastic!!!! or am i misreading this.

No, I used one on a network show last fall, even with the big mic I refered to. It's definitely "network level" so far as I'm concerned, at least for a CMT Network show, which is a pretty good sized network.

i'm not sure if my post made it but did you say that the sennheiser evolution produced sound and reliability that was acceptable for a network shoot!
i am impressed... and humbled and may be saving a little money buying a couple of those babies.

Yes. It's a great transmitter/receiver combo. I prefer a different, smaller mic than the atrocious round one I got stuck with on that shoot (gear provided) even the one that Walter mentioned which apparently is the one that actually comes with the kit. The sound quality was perfectly acceptable. It's a heck of a deal, too. Much more user friendly to operate than the Lectro and it uses affordable AA batteries.. It would be my choice today.

Hope this helps.
Brian

brian... you mentioned earlier a lectrosonics hybrid and affordability...
is that in the G2 range or is it in the lectro 100 range or much higher...
thanks i appreciat this

The 400 series Digital Hybrid is around $2500 today. Lectro LM/UCR100 is $1000 w/out mic.
None will be remotely close to $500 anytime soon. Everything labled "Lectro" costs more.

That seems obvious, but you know.....
Hope this helps, Brian
