Mixer Considerations

Mixer Considerations

FP31 is three input/mono output.
FP32/32A are three input/stereo output but have noise issues.. in other words, "hiss"

FP33 is three input/stereo output.
corrects the high noise floor problems of previous models.
pretty okay little box.. on eBay all the time for around $600 or so.
Sold mine in perfect shape with a Porta Brace bag for like $950 couple months ago.

I personally would stay away from older models myself. There are much better products
from Sound Devices and Wendt today. Sound Devices 302 or Wendt X3 come to mind as
both being very good products that would be serious contenders in my mind for a purchase.

I like the Shure FP33 in the "best bang for the second hand buck" category, but I wouldn't
even consider buying one at retail considering the better options available today.

Hope this helps.

Also, the Shure burns through a pair of 9V batteries every four hours. Fine if somebody else
is providing batteries, but stinks if you're paying for them. Any potential $$ you save on the
price of the mixer will be eaten up in 9V batteries in a hurry. The other mixers use AA's.

Sound Devices and Wendt mixers would get my recommendation for that feature alone.

thanks especially on the fp32a... i was really considering it.
stereo is not an issue for me... don't really care
but could anybody elaborate on the hiss coming from the shure mixers...
thanks i really appreciate this forum... i'm a network camera person who makes living shooting news and docs... but sound is more or less a mystery to me (but i realize how absolutely essential it is)
I appreciate this forum for all its inputs...

i have checked them (sound devices) out and the last sound man i worked with used one of theirs i believe, what is their build quality like and availability?

My needs are 3 inputs one for boom and two wireless kits.

ps my next post will ask about quality wireless all i know are lectrosonics and senn....
i use sony wireless... built into the SX cameras... but the transmitters aren't all that durable in my opinion.
thanks

The 302 will do what you need. Solid build, very reliable. BH sells them I believe.

Wait three months and get a Lectrosonics Digital Hybrid system..
Promised not to say much, but they'll be a more more affordable option by the end of summer.

Noticed the 400's already dropped significantly; you got an extra bit of info???? Do tell!!!!

saw them... and the lectro 100 series..
what is the build quality on the sennheisers...
thanks.... sound quality comparisons would be great...

and yes i saw the lectro price drop on the 400s.... but that is out of my range
i'm putting money into a shotgun and mixer... and maybe a couple of lectro 100 series.
but am very curios about the senn... series mentioned.

I own three 100's and have used the Sennheiser.. I'd go with the Sennheiser if I were buying now.
They're just about as good... and, way less money than the Lectro.

how does the mike that comes with the kit sound
and i'm hopefully going on the road to a third world country which will be far from a fix it guy. is it built tough.
i had originally dismissed the senns... as too cheap to be good category... but now i have to admit i'm intrigued.

I don't like it. The mic that comes with those things is about the diameter of a dime which is
enormous in the context of what is available today. Seems to sound alright in my quick, non
scientific comparison but it's huge and it looks bad on camera. Impossible to conceal. :thumbdown

Actually the sennheiser mic is not that big at all. Its no bigger than tram but round. FOr the money compared to Lectrosonic and SOny the Sennheiser wins hands down. It has better specs and features.

Walter, you make it sound like I've never seen a microphone or something?

The mic included with the Sennheiser Evolution system I used was way too big for pro use.
I don't see how any professional could use it. It just doesn't seem very professional to me.
