FForward & Rewinding

Is Fast Frowarding and Rewinding of tapes (I don't mean cueing during playback) doing any damage to DVX100's tape mechanism?

Thanks

Re: FForward & Rewinding

I'm no expert but I would think the people who designed the DVX did so with fast forwarding in mind. It is going to produce wear and tear on the camera over time. But the question you ask would be like asking if dirving your car into and reversing out of a parking stall would damage the drive train. Same thing... it will produce wear and tear, but it is designed with this in mind. Every movement your DVX tape transport endures will ultimately bring it one step closer to it's demise. Box it up, put it on a shelf and never use it and it will last forever.

Re: FForward & Rewinding

My question was influenced by a lot of posts around here with advices like "using your dvx100 as a vcr is not recomended due to faster head ware and tare".
Maybe I should refrase my question to "is there any head ware and tare with rewinding and fast forwarding"?

Re: FForward & Rewinding

the posts you are refering to advise that you use a cheap camera or deck to edit on. It is an oppertunity to save wear and tear on your DVX heads and editing (constantly ff and rw'ing) the tape will rack up those hours. The DVX heads are rated for 1000 hours of use. Anytime tape passes over the heads, it comes off the 1000 hour head life. So, fast forwarding and rewinding the tape in your camera will not damage the tape transport or heads (unless you want to call wear and tear dammage...fair enough). It will, however reduce the 1000 hour life span of the video record / playback heads. To reduce wear and tear, it is recomended that you purchase a cheaper camera unit which you can use to edit your footage and even fast forward and rewind your tape. The idea is that spending money on the cheap unit will avoid the large bill asscociated with having your DVX heads replaced. Again to use analogy., if you own a very expensive car, you might want to drive your cheaper one to the corner store for milk and save the wear and tear on the expensive one. I hope I've made sense here ;)
