How about suggestions for a follow focus whip?
I haven't used these in many years and have a rental coming up who wants one. i need one anyway.

Who makes a good one that's still less than $300 from Arri?
Do they vary that much in quality?

Also what length do people prefer and get you get away with just one ?

Crank vs. whip?

Thanks guys & gals

Hey Lenilenapi,

We make a set of whips and well as a crank to go along with our follow focus systems. It is standard accessory port with an adjustable ball lock similar to the Arri accessories. I've used our accessories on both our microFollowFocus as well as multiple Arri follow focuses, no problems there. I personally like the 12" whip, not to long, not to short. Just enough to remove the AC from the rig, while not too long to cause some flop.

As for the Crank vs Whip, I feel like they're two different tools for two different jobs. The crank is for achieving longer pulls without having to dislocate your wrist. I put the ball end of it in my palm, and do a move that looks a lot like washing the window of a car. While the whip is for removing the focus puller from the rig to give the operator more freedom to move.

Thanks Loren,

I want to get some more feedback about different manufacturers before I decide where to buy but the advice is great.
As I'm using Zeiss and Nikon still lenses - long crank moves are not my problem - throws are usually too short.
12" crank sounds like the ticket.

Do you think there is any need to get the bundle or just go for a 12"?B
TW do you have them in stock ?

Lenny,

Really depends on what you're doing. If you'll be doing any Jib work, then you'll need the 18" Whip. If you're in really close quarters and simply need your AC's hand out of the way so you can see the monitor, the 3" could be best. But I find for most stuff the 12" is the best/most versatile. If you're renting them out however, it's attractive to operators to have all the options.

Keep in mind, our gear also carries a lifetime warrantee, so you can buy with confidence.

I have a set from redrock micro, made really good. three different lengthes. The india made whips are garbage. stay away fom them. your best bet is to spend a little more to get a good quality whip and spead crank. When I shoot from the shoulder, I like a whip, but if the camera is on a tripod, I always use a speed crank instead.

I have a Redrock set. Well made.

The advice above regarding which one to use is correct - it really depends on the situation. Length is crucial when it's not practical for the AC to remain next to the lens, or when distances change quicky - but the price you pay is a loss of torque. Turning a 3" whip is like butter, turning an 18" inch whip takes more wrist exertion.
