FF VG900 hands-on !

Maybe I've missed this (22 pages is a lot to read), but I'm curious about stills.

Is it in fact the same sensor as the A99, or just similar? Are there any compression problems the A99 doesn't have? Does the VG900 have the same dynamic range and "look" as A99?

My VG900 with 24mm F1.4 Rokinon (Pentax K-mount version) with Fotodiox PK-NEX adapter I just received today to add to my other fast F1.4 35mm, F1.4 50mm and F1.4 85mm primes.

Hmm those Rokinon cine version primes are very interesting. I understand they are full manual so when used on the VG-900 there would be no f-stop displayed on the oled and that's fine. But I presume gain would still be shown on the oled when using one of these lenses is that correct? I ask because the way I shoot is set everything manually until I get the look I like, then adjust my heliopan nd filter until the gain is shown to be near zero on the oled of the VG-900.

On my VG900 all of the gain and shutter info is shown even when I use a lens with no aperture control like my 900mm F5.9.

Made another short compilation video of ladies smoking, all filmed with the VG900 and various lenses. The source video is 1920x1080 60fps open shutter, so the Vimeo re-encode doesn't look as good of course. All outdoor shots use the heliopan nd filter, and color grading was done in Vegas Pro 12. Take a peek, I always love to hear constructive criticism or lens recommendations for the type of stuff I film.

[h=2]How to get a Sony NEX with a 24 x 36mm sensor?[/h]
That's actually relatively simple. For a long time, we wondered whether it'd be better to try sticking the NEX's E lens mount onto the front of a Sony RX1 (24 x 36 mm, 24.3-MP CMOS) or whether it'd be better to build the electronics and sensor of an RX1 into the body of the NEX-7. But while we're always up for a bit of DIY, there's no way we can undertake that kind of serious camera surgery. Thankfully, a solution jumped right out at us from Sony's own product range—no, really! You may remember back in November 2012, Sony presented the NEX-VG900 camcorder, which basically combines the sensor from the RX1 with native compatibility for NEX lenses. Now, doesn't that sound interesting ...
[h=2]But it's a camcorder![/h]
Yeah, OK, it's a camcorder ... but it has a 24 x 36 mm sensor and an E lens mount (no, really, we just can't get enough of that either!). Although it's technically a camcorder, right now, for the sake of pondering over the possibility of a full-frame NEX, we're only interested in what kind of pictures the VG900 takes. We're therefore not going to go into its design, handling, responsiveness or video quality here (sorry video buffs). Instead, we're going to look purely at the still-shot photo mode. In any case, 24 million pixels (6000 x 4000 pixels) aren't necessarily all that useful for filming Full HD video (1920 x 1080 pixels ... or 8.64% of the sensor's total resolution).

For taking photos, you'll be pleased to hear that the NEX-VG900E has a proper electro-mechanical shutter (something you don't get with the RX1), and that it can shoot RAW photos (ARW files) and has sensitivity settings from 100 to 25600 ISO. Wunderbar! Now let's get it into the lab.

Since I have many full frame PK mount lenses that I use with the VG900 I will get the new $110 Lens Turbo PK-NEX mount that works like the Metabones Speed Booster in APS-C mode.
Big news guys! The Chinese company Zhongyi Optical officially announced the “Lens Turbo” adapter. It’s the cheap alternative of the famous Speed Booster. The Zhongyi Optical company isn’t an unknown company for NEX owners. The company is the maker of the Mitakon 35mm f/0.95 E-mount lens (they are here on eBay). On the picture on top you can see the Pentax to NEX adapter.
How did they avoid to get into a legal dispute with Metabones? The optical design differs and the Lens Turbo has a reduction ration of 0.726 (Speed Booster is 0.71). It’s a manual adapter only while some Speed Booster adapters also support full electronic AF and Aperture control. The Lens Turbo price is set at RMB$850, which is roughly US$110.

BTW I just purchased the Sony 55-210mm OSS E mount to use with the 16-50mm OSS PZ lens when I want to use the VG900 like a consumer camcorder with AF and OSS in APS-C mode. It is sharper in tests vs the 18-200mm in the 55-200 range and the 16-50 is a little wider.

I always like reading about lens purchases, I'm starting to become a lens addict myself :) I just got two e-mount full frame Rokinon cine lenses to use with my VG900, the 35mm t1.5 and 85mm t1.5. Haven't done any official video shoot with them yet (just some tests) but so far they seem like an unusually good bargain. I'm particularly happy with the 85mm, at $350 this lens is a steal from what I'm seeing so far. I wish they had 50mm and 135mm in that Rokinon cine line, I'd snap those up as well.

Yeah, a 135mm F1.8 is on my wish list. I just purchased the Sony HVL-F60M flash with LED light that works great on the VG900..
