Few Questions | First Shoot Tomorrow

Hello,

Tomorrow is my first shoot with the HMC-150. I got my camera last week.

I have a few questions, if no one minds me asking...

1) I will be shooting outside on a sunny day. I've used 100% Zebra in the past to check for over exposure. What is the use of 105% Zebra? 70% is okay to have on the cheek bones, nose?

2) I do understand how a waveform works. Is there anything useful I need to know about the waveform with the HMC-150. So far I just know I shouldn't have anything above 100 or below 0. As far as the distribution on the graph.. I don't know how to read it for under exposer. I assume on a sunny day most of my graph will be above 50?

3) What scene file settings do you suggest? The video is a love story. I'm considering just going stock scene file 1 so I have more options in post.

Thank you for your time!

Best regards,

Jordan Berry

Hi Jordan,

I have stayed with 100% zebras and really try to keep it off of their face. Hopefully they are not wearing white clothing, but if they are, I have sacraficed some detail in white clothing to get the exposure correct on their face.

Since you will be outside with plenty of sun, I would experiment with Scene Files 5 & 6. Another thing to consider with outdoor shooting, it to use your ND filters so you can open up the iris. Not only will it make it easier to get a shallow DoF, but when shooting into the sun, it will hide any specs of dust that may get on your lens.

Have fun!

Shouldn't the graph still be as full as possible? But then again your subject exposure is the most important.

I will be shooting a Theater show and I have used the auto shutter before. It turned out terrible, Wide shots make the stage way over exposed since it was trying to pick up the dark audience.

Now that i will be shooting manual, wont my wave form be on the darker side? I wont have a monitor for a few more months...
