Few Beginner Questions

I'm new to the Production side of Filmmaking. I've been on the post side forever, and I've took the jump and decided to shoot some of my own stuff.

So, I got a DVX100, and now I'm going through the Menu Settings. I have a few questions, and some answers may be obvious, I just want clarification.

Skin Tone Detail. What are the advantages and disadvantages to having this turned on? Is there a particular time when I should/shouldn't have it on?

V DETAIL FREQ. What is it? Should I have it on thin or thick?

Thanks a lot in advance for the help!

skin tone detail will turn off artificial sharpening on skin tones when you have the detail up in the positive numbers. you really wont ever notice much of a difference with it on or off.

Always keep V Detail Freq to thin to get the best possible picture, especially with 24p. The reason thick is there is to apply blur to scan lines on interlaced TV's, or something. I may have forgotten. It's late. Rule of thumb: keep it at thin.
