Felt Fabric

Anyone use felt fabric as a substitution for Duvetyne ? I know its not flame retardant but would felt block light 100% ?

Yes, I've pulled it off the truck and used it and it was good and light proof. It also had the considerable advantage of being much lighter than Duvetyne which made it far easier to use as a skirt around some China balls.

Haven't run out and bought any though. :)

Are you talking about rip stop nylon slondon?

I've never come across felt in a truck or on set, but rip stop nylon is great because it blocks a lot of the light and is light weight, so it's great for china balls. You should give that a shot.

Well I tend to be on the conservative side, i use only Duvetyne around stuff that are hot and flammable. I am looking for cheaper material to just block out windows ...etc.Ryan, is ripstop thick enough to block out all 100% light from coming in ? and Slondon what about Felt is it 100% not allowing any light to pass thru ?? BTW, Felt is almost 50% cheaper than Duvetyne.

Ripstop is not thick enough to block 100% of the light, but it definitely gives things a good cut. It's really just good for skirting things because of it's weight.

I didn't know you're trying to black out windows though, and in that case, visqueen is your answer. It's like black trash bag material that can be had at any hardware store for pretty cheap. Honestly, people tend to use that much more than duvy if they're trying to black out windows.

I didn't put the felt up to windows to see how light tight it was. When I want to go light and cheap to black out a lot of windows I buy 3 or 4 mil black plastic sheeting.

I didn't skirt the China balls directly on the lanterns either, I would have used Duvy for that because of the fire risk.

I used the felt to construct a skirt around two 20" China balls above a poker table making it a kind of chicken coop. The felt was suspended from some from existing fluorescent fixtures and pushpins into the gypsum wallboard textured ceiling and was always at least 24" from the lanterns. I figured it was fire safe and it was absolutely light tight.

I know it's a lot cheaper and I'm sure that is why it was on the other gaffer's G&E truck.

I've never tried black ripstop (gridcloth) but hanging a scrap of Duvy on a China ball to keep the spill off the ceiling and tops of the walls and off the dark half of the set is a problem. It's heavy and makes the lantern tip. I have tried Lanternlocks and they are nice. I haven't tried painting part of the lantern black but I hear from other gaffers that it's not so great.

My $0.02.
