Feedback on music vid? -Self Control at its Finest

GREAT JOB!!!! Loved it. good energy, camera shots and flow. Do you have anymore shots of the drummer from right directly infront of him? I loved that shot.
The only think that sucks, is the song is too damn long. They love that catchy little hook the wrote so much don't they, they wanted to play it over and over!! Great job though.
What shutter speed?

I watched it twice, first time with sound, second time sans. I think your title in the beginning needs to be onscreen for a hair longer.

Your edit is already really tight. I think the premise (band performance in a studio, on a rooftop, etc) is pretty limited. I would try experimenting with freeze frames which go into jump cuts, something to break up the monotony of cut cut cut. It could be interesting to freeze on a spastic expression of the singer. He's pretty animated and a couple of freeze frames throughout of the band could keep the audience watching.

I really liked that bird shot. It was something abstract which was almost like a wake up call. Maybe more abstract shots would add some variety to the setting. I hope this doesn't sound like I'm harping on your work, I think it's good, the effort shows, I just think that more spice is needed to pump up the piece and take it from being a competent piece to being something more engaging. Just my honest opinion.

thanks ...

Idog:  funny, i typically gravitate towards the drummer b/c I'm a drummer, too.  We're always so neglected!!!  But i try to remain objective ;-)

These are the 1st round "choice cuts".  I like that drummer shot too, but i worry that his shirt is a bit too blown out.  He does a really good job energy-wise, though.

Shutter was 120, but poor fcp compression makes it look higher.  Still need to color correct a bit, etc.

Isaac:  Yeah, the bird was the serendipitous (sp?!) shot.  A little secret = (it's just a crazy nyc pigeon!!!  but it looks oh-so-lovely, huh!) Agreed I like the idea of freeze frames ... the singer really is animated and interesting to watch.

Shanx doods!

Shot in NYC on a killer rooftop.

Rock.

I like the song, the rooftop idea works for this band/song, and the camera work is really good. My only comments would be that you should do some serious color work, either as a general fix or shot by shot to add some depth and differentiation. After the first minute the "look" lost my interest a little. Maybe some shots have completely different looks color-wise. ?

Another thing, and I know there's nothing you can do about it now, but the whole camera-shake look works in VERY limited doses, but toward the end it feels more gimmicky than anything. I guess I've seen this too much lately to be truly objective. Sorry not to be harsh at all, I think overall the camera work is really, really good and interesting!

I thought this was a great looking piece; lots of cuts and movement to keep the eye full of candy. I agree with Isaac; more 'conceptual' imagery would really balance this out. Have you considered some alternating color correction? Not throughout, but intermittent to punch some clips up.

My .02 and a disturbingly familiar video; we shot one last year similar. I like yours better as well as the song. (Something cool about being on top of a rooftop).

Great job!

Exposure and comps are good, but it'd be really nice to have that one great location broken up a bit. Great color too.

Great job. The atmosphere is nice -- I'd like to see the "magic hour" hues, the pinks, purples, and oranges, brought out even more.

What does the band think?

I agree that it need a bit more in the variety department. If you can string together some story elements from the song. It just gets old with one location performance.

And some CC should go a long way on this one.

Re: Feedback on music vid? -Self Control at its Fi

Hey fellas .. thanks!

The band loves it so far.  Even with all my discalimers (still have a lot of work to do blah blah blah)!!!  I'm working with a couple of ideas to make it a little bit more interesting.

The color correcting is going to be last on my list ... just takes way too much time to render, and then if I need to tweek a shot ... re-rendering is killer!!!

But specifically ... when you say "color correcting" ... what do you mean?  I plan to bring the balcks down a bit, try to maintain the colorful skies, and take care of blown out whites (drummer shirt, etc.).  What else do your eyes see that mine are missing?

Hi Toaster-

Nice job. I'll try not to repeat what others have said, as I agree on many of the comments, especially about concept and shortening.

why not mix it in with a live concert of the same song. I would love to see people jumping around- bobbing their heads and raising fists to this one. i would do that here at my desk, but no one would see, which is half the fun :).

where the pigeon flies..is a good place to bring in other elements.

how can I hear more of their music?

let us know how the other cuts go

The band is good too.

Dude, that drummer is TIGHT! (ex-drummer here)

Bring in some story. Your shooting of this one location is nice. Working in a storyline will put this over the top.

As far as color correction goes, don't think so much correction as alteration. i.e. the overused 'Matrix' look, or super hot oranges (although I'd probably stay in the greens and blues with that overcast sky). Desaturate, or oversaturate, etc. Don't just give us straight-up color.

Here's a cc'd grab I pulled off of your small movie, so it's distorted from being blown-up. But I think you can grab the idea...

Re: Feedback on music vid? -Self Control at its Fi

i guess you followed the mtv rule: every first rock vid must be the band playing their instuments in some location other than a stage or practice space with no audience. and nothing else.

how about some new stuff intercut...like the lonely road vid from greenday? something actually related to the lyrics (dare i suggest such a thing?) some grain, some color correction, some transitions, play with the focus, jazz it up?

its a music video not a documentary.

Re: Feedback on music vid? -Self Control at its Fi

Re: Feedback on music vid? -Self Control at its Fi

the music is good new garage, the band should like the video, they come off great. i think if more shooting is a option, i'd try shooting the people of n.y.c. turning their heads n smiling etc. as if hearing the band. cut aways or crosscutting another story line could ramp it up another notch. or not. good work.
