FEATURE: Welcome to the Bates Motel

Shooting out at the Bates Motel and Haunted Hayride in Gradyville, PA. It's going to be a really interesting experience, and I hope to be able to share lessons learned and the like with the crowd here. I've learned a lot from eveyone else.

That being said, any advice is welcomed.

Shooting with two 5D's, one 7D, and BTS DVD bonus footage on my HPX170.

Got a jib, trying to get a dolly, steadycam, slider, and snorricam to play with. And maybe a helicopter/small plane. Crossing my fingers for that.

website is www.WelcometotheBatesMotel.com

PS the website right now is a fundraising one with www.indiegogo.com. I've heard good things about kickstarter but indiegogo lets you keep the money even if you don't reach your goal. But they take commision 9-4 percent. I'm not sure if its going to bring in more than I would by asking for paypal donations.

Also we're looking into various additional fundraising things to do. I hope to report on that progress, see what works for us and what doesn't.

Good luck to you all,
Byron

sounds cool
I'd like to know what fundraising techniques work, and how your able to get people to donate
thanks

sound like a cool feature. cant wait!

Great to hear of someone doing a haunted house theme feature, the haunt industry is in a golden age right now.

Yea, I've never been into the haunted house thing, but I have to say I like "13 Ghost". That was spooky.

Thanks guys. I feel kind of cheesy telling everyone how great my movie is going to be as a general statement (geeking out over shots and the like is something different), but I will not hesitate to recommend the Bates Motel and Haunted Hayride. If you live within driving distance of Philly, plan a trip there this fall. It will blow you away, these guys know what they are doing.

As for fundraising-right now I'm posting it on facebook while trying to work on other production elements. Not that effective, but starting monday I will be sending out personal emails and I expect to bring in some money there. We also got great advice to auction off a role in it, which will be part of a fundraising process we do locally in Gradyville/West Chester, PA. This stuff could raise money for gear or something smaller, but it's also free publicity and creates a buzz.

Along those lines, we are aiming to create a strong buzz in the greater Philly area and will push hard for self distribution there. I don't think it's worth trying to sell our movie in LA. At least not with our own effort.

I have been scouring dvxuser for information about foreign market distribution. I heard there's something a IFM or IFSM convention or organization where you go and try to sell your movie. I think if we could get a deal we would be very comfortable going into production. I'm going to edit myself and try to utilize friends for other necessary areas of polishing - score, sound design, fx, color. And by utilize I mean offer a trade in services as I shoot and edit with my own gear.

hmm... I should start with finding a good soundguy and good soundgear....

If you have 20.000 dollar and you could choose between a helicopter shot for 10.000 dollar or good sound...choose for good sound...And leave the helicopter for what it is... Nobody will say "damn, I miss a helicoptershot"....nobody....

And yes you have to follow this advice

Funny, I just watched that viral video/animation of the producer talking to the sound guy. I know sound guys who I consider family and have worked with before, and they are signed on. If not, we'll find a good talent from the area. Sound is most important, I believe, to the end product. Coming from doing sound on a thesis film in college and all the docu-reality work I do (frankenbyting), I know sound is key.

It was indeed because I saw it too....

Are you going to shoot on the RED ?? It's 4 K !!! :2vrolijk_08::grin::-HeadPhones(D:-Dum(DBG):

If that's what you considder a piece of crap.... Do you mind if I follow you around with a plastic bag?

It's a joke from that video. I actually love this camera and spent a while trying to decide whether to shoot on a 7D, 5D, or get a DOF adapter for my HPX170, and went with the 5Dmk2. I love it, and I still have use for my HPX170, recently used it while in the middle east with the Warrior Tours (www.thewarriortours.com).

Nice dude!

Just shot a movie with a bunch of wounded Iraq war vets... Man if every guy on a crew could be like those guys I'd never have another worry on set. The best crew I've ever worked with period. ( www.frozenchosin.com )

If you need any help on this project just let me know! I'm a huge fan of the bates motel and haunted hayride!

I wish I had time to work with more vets and service members. I spent a few years working a marine boot camp documentary. Good people.

Thanks for the offer to help, I might just take you up on that offer.

i think auctioning off a role is a cool idea. Community needs more of that... Bfever keep us informed how that worked out for you... Good Luck man

Well one of my co-producers is a lead in the movie and is also SAG. We had a couple other roles we were hoping to fill with SAG members, but that SAG Ultra Low Budget Agreement just looks like crap. I am trying to find more first hand accounts of dealing with it and trying to sell the movie. Have any of you dealt with SAG?

I'd like to share the latest promo for the movie with some behind the scenes footage. Thank you for viewing!
