F3: Feature trailer

A couple of months ago I shot some key scenes for a director and his feature which he’ll try to raise funds to make. It was a few hectic days to get it all done and we had a small team and few actors. It’s all in Swedish so to explain the story it’s about a guy struggling with his relation to love, life and work. Title translated from Swedish – “A few words about love”.

I used my Sony PMW-F3 shooting to the internal SxS cards and using S-log gamma. Audio was recorded mostly externally but in some scenes we used the audio on the F3. For the tracking shots I used my Cinevate Atlas 30 slider and lenses were Canon L lenses. Mostly the Canon 50/1.2L. Grading in DaVinci by a colorist.

This looks fantastic, relaxed colour without being milky log washout. And nice to see some locked down shots while your Danish cousins indulge in too much shakey cam.

Can you tell a little of the lights package required to have flat even light indoors and see the world outside?

Thanks :)

We used minimal lighting. A couple of kinoflow 4x4 to balance the room with the incoming light from windows and one or two reflectors. In a few scenes we filled the room pointing the kinos at the ceiling and sometimes they were aimed directly at the actor.

The gaffer we wanted to help couldn't find the time so that put a limit on what types of lights we could use and how much time I had to light each scene. I had a clear idea though on how to set the light and how to make use of window light to work fast.

With my FS100 the interior would be black until lit with a giga watt ! Im trying to see how much the Slog gets you - a lot it seems.

Nice.

Love the look. The F3 is a hell of a cam too. Did you have any problems with S-log only going to internal cards? I would worry about the 8bit 420 space but it looks good here.

I couldn't be happier with my F3 purchase. S-log to the internal cards works fine if you get the exposure right and don't have to push footage to far. But it's also a bit unrefined compared to 10-bit 4:2:2 high bitrate. In this case me and the director came to the conclusion that the vast amount of data with external recording wasn't neccessary to make this trailer. Most of the time I do shoot to Prores HQ but then it's commercials with heavier grading or compositing.
