Feature films on the HMC150

I'm trying to shoot a feature on my HMC. I say "try" because of the incredible number of problems I've had. The problems are things like schedules, the weather, casting, injuries, an actor bailing on me, etc, not the camera (well, aside from me accidentally damaging it and it needing a repair, but that was my fault). I'm not positive if I'm going to be able to even finish it at all. But I'm certainly learning a lot. :)

So far it appears I'm the only one out there shooting a narrative feature on the HMC. Is that correct? Kind of surprising as it is getting close to a year old, and it's basically the successor to the DVX100.

Jim,

I am not sure if I could help at all but if you are interested in an extra hand here and there shoot me a PM and we can see if I can help out at all... I am also in St Louis....

a feature was shot here locally with the 150.

Ive shot several shorts with the 150 too.

Cant wait to get my hands on a 7D...

I'm shooting a short right now on it (under 20 minutes)...

Footage looks great. If given a choice between this and the hvx, HMC would win every time.

Just finished shooting a short with it using my buddy's Brevis35 adapter (thanks Antz!). Footage looks great and I don't see any downsides to using it for narrative work other than it being a softer resolution camcorder. The softness adds an extra bit of organic film look IMHO though.

Great quote from Penny Marshall:

"Films aren't 'made', they're forced into existence."

About how hard it can be to get a decent film FINISHED.

I am shooting soon...

I am shooting soon...

I am going to filming a short next month and was looking for your opinions as to what settings to use when shooting.

also did you choose to use off camera audio? or did you use the on board recording inputs?

I am personally thinking about using 1080/24, and thinking to test the scene file settings a little, would love some input, don't have much experience with them or what they mean/do/change...

any info will be appreciated... also references or websites referrals are appreciated...

Jim I'm making my first feature length project on the HMC.

I have a full time job and a family so not much spare time. I'm untrained in any aspect of film making (therefore learning every day), I don't have much equipment and although it is really a big struggle on a variety of levels - I'm still excited about it!

I'm sure most of us share similar problems to you. When I'm tired at the end of a long day I sometimes feel like it is not worth the stress, I often can't motivate myself, and obstacles get me down. Conversely, most mornings when I wake up I can sometimes problem-solve in an instant and I'm really upbeat about the scenes still to be organised and captured. I focus on the most important scene to tackle next - and keep an eye on those to come. You are not alone!
