FCS2 Installation Nightmare

Here's the deal. I started with Final Cut Studio (FCP 5.1 and whatnot) installed, with everything except Motion. I got Final Cut Studio 2, and wanting to do a clean install instead of an upgrade, I moved all the Final Cut apps to the trash and emptied it. However, when I re-booted, nearly 30GB of space still seemed to be taken up by all the extra templates/crap you get when you install FCS. I started to install FCS2 hoping that it would pick up on the old files and maybe just overwrite them during the install process. Well, FCS2 takes about 30GB to install as well, and I'm now down to 16GB of space left on my 100GB hard drive inside my 17" Powerbook G4. I want to get rid of all the junk left behind by the first FCS install.

What do I do now?

I'll be interested in how it runs for you. I haven't loaded mine on my PowerBook G4, though I've had it for a month.

Haven't ever used it, but from a few other postings, you could try AppZapper and then do a fresh install of FCS2. Good luck.

Cheers.

FCS2 apps run fine for me on my PB G4 (1.67ghz, 100gb hdd, 2gb ram, Mobility Radeon 9700 128mb). Motion well, I don't expect anything quick. FCP runs great. Rendering sucks (5mins to render a 16sec clip with some Magic Bullet Looks grunge effect). DVDSP runs fine. Haven't messed with Color much. Soundtrack Pro runs fine (don't use it much).

Anyways, as far as your problem goes, try uninstalling all the FCS2 apps and try and fine where the templates are stored and send them to the trash. Other than that, not sure.

Yup...I'll echo everyone elses posts - and I'll go you one further and actually give you a link: AppZapper is a great little program.

Now I'm not sure how well it will work in this case given that you've already deleted the application file. Usually you would drag and drop the app file into AppZapper and it will then find every file related to that program - not sure if it'll work if you simply grab one of the FCP5.1 files you have left and drag and drop that into AppZapper - but its worth a shot.

Dear Apple, please include an uninstaller with your apps that put crap everywhere all over your system, making it impossible to easily uninstall.

I haven't tried App Zapper on such an extensive program but it has worked great on the stuff I've tried it on.

Trash all the extra content (templates, etc.) and then only reinstall the FCS2 content. There's a window that appears during FCS install that lets you pick which components to install (and where).

I second the request for an uninstaller for Apple apps. What a hassle when you need to reinstall FCS.

Many of us backup critical files to an external and do a wipe and a clean install, not an upgrade or archive.

First OS with updates and then all the apps with updates.
