FCPX help and answers

FCPX export to corrupt the video. Just stumbled upon this forum in an attempt to fix an FCPX export problem. Hope I'm posting in the right place...

Recently started using FCPX and processed one project successfully. Upon exporting a 2nd project the video corrupts by getting stuck and flickering between two frames while the audio still plays correctly.
I have tried to export to different file sizes/codecs but the problem stays, each time getting stuck in a different place. Please HELP!

Tried everything suggested on the Apple FCPx support forums but nothing works.... how do you get FCPx to recognise external hard-drives? some times they show up other times they don't. I've done the permissions thing the Time-Machine thing etc nothing seems to work. Its all voodoo. :(

I have been working for 7 hours today on a major 3-month project. Everything was okay until I closed it and tried to open it. I received this error:

"/Volumes/MediaSAN4/Workbench/HRL /Final Cut Events/Move-In is already open with the same identifier as /Volumes/MediaSAN4/Workbench/HRL /Final Cut Events/Move-In, so the second document cannot be opened.

Move one of these documents out of your Final Cut Events folder. To avoid this problem, copy events from within Final Cut Pro."

not sure what it wants me to do.

When i hit ok EVERY event is gone. all projects say missing event. Even the two I'm not working on. I'm so frustrated I've thought about starting the project over in 7 but I want to stick with it.

I work for a university and have not been able to find help, even from my boss. The only thing I have found to fix it is to dismount the drive (mediasan4) and then remount it and it reconnects everything. But this can't be a good way to work. There are no duplicate events anywhere. there IS for some reason a duplicate mediasan4 drive in the project library, but not under the events library. I have been working in one and everytime I make an edit to my projects in there it makes the changes to the other one. I cannot find a way to delete it. We just reinstalled fcpx a few days ago.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

I'm assuming you tried the obvious things, like restarting the computer (ugh), etc...

Try running DiskWarrior (if you have it) against that drive. If you don't have it (it's worth having!), at least try verifying the disk using Disk Utility.

Try what it suggested for that matter -- if you have another drive available with a bit of space to test with, try copying the event and project to another drive, dismount the drive that is giving you problems, and see what happens if working from the other drive for a while.

Regardless of whatever else you might do, make sure you have a backup copy.

They need to be Mac HFS formatted. FAT32 won´t show up.

What is your final output? TV, DVD, web?

Web ..i used cpmpressor to transcode to 720p and its looks a lot nicer..I need to get to the bottom of this, it might be something I'm doing I'll keep the forum posted.

How does one do keyframing the audio? Easy in FCP7 - pen tool, click click click, drag, drag, drag.
FCP X, head scratch, head scratch, hair pull.
Anybody?
Thanks.

Same as FCP 7 I think its Alt key and mouse click to set a keyframe on the audio ..drag for effect ( I think its Alt key I have had a few glasses of wine)

Cured it! Cheers. But really X has gotten rid of some simple things - for instance where is the fade in fade out transition? Where is the slug?

And how does one do the positional edit again? I want to put an edit in place without the magnetic timeline moving it out of place. Thanks much!

Press the "P" button for turning off magnetic timeline editing. Then, I suggest some websites like ripple training for you.

Cheers dusty, dunno about ripple - looked at that, seems like they sell lesson per lesson. Besides, I'd rather check out something comprehensive without going over too many basics.
You know, like a FCP X tutorial for Legacy users instead of going over very basic basics. In FCP7 I feel like I've got 20 fingers, each with a mind of its own. Here, I have one fish-finger with the mind of a vegetable!!

Even the simplest of things aggravate me in this program. For instance - the intro titles in my current project, white text, black screen: I select basic title from the title's browser, drag it, type up the text in the inspector, and really, that should be it. Basic black background. Oh no, not so simple - the background is checkered! Text illegible!!! So maybe there's a slug so I can just throw in a black background. No. Really??? Been beating myself over the head for the last ten minutes for something so simplistic. Why are things so needlessly drastically different? I mean I'm going to need tutorials anyway, but for something as simple as a title's background which is automatic in legacy programs?? I mean, I just got very comfortable at FCP7, and boom - I'm a moron again! Why couldn't they build upon what's good and simple and then add all the goodies?

A)Anyway, help with the title, anyone. I'd hate to have to go back to FCP7, but if deadlines prove threateningly imminent, might just go right back so I can deliver this project on time.

B) Also I still haven't been able to resolve the multicam edit. Is there a length limit to the clips you can introduce to the "new multicam clip"? I'm trying to synch up a 2.5 minute song with 4-8 takes. I go through the steps, the progress bar shows up, works for a bit, then abruptly vanishes - no trace of the multicam clip.

DTZ, you need to do the first Ripple Training course. You're asking super basic questions. It took you time to get your 7 chops, it'll take time (although much less) to get your X chops. Nothing in X is like 7. Biggest mistake anyone can make, and I see it in my classes all the time, is 7 users trying to compare the two. You simply can't.

A) Never seen a checkered background in the FCP X Canvas, trying and can't make it happen here. Go to the Canvas menu (top right of canvas, light switch button) and make sure Channels is set to All.

B) Read the user manual for multicam, it's more advanced than anything and some things are not blatantly obvious. I highly recommend Ripple Training's multicam course to really learn it inside and out. It's super powerful. Also make sure your Browser's filter window is set to All, the search field is blank, so you're not accidentally filtering out things actually there in the Browser. Multicam is simply a highly specialized type of Compound Clip.

Command-T gives the default cross dissolve transition on video and video/audio clips, gives a cross face for audio clips.
Slugs are not called Gap Clips, and you can insert one with Opt-W.

If you don't do proper training, you're going to flounder around. But once you do the training, it's a very fast editor. And the user manual is right there in the help menu. Everything y'all are asking about is basically there, too.

You don't want to go over the basics, yet continue to ask how to do them.

Taking tutorials to learn a new software isn't a cop out or any sign of weakness by you, it's a fundamental step in understanding an ENTIRELY new software.

Spend the 40 dollars, get the ripple training.

Same as 7, Option-click to make a keyframe on the clip in the Timeline. But it's really much easier now. Use "R" to get the Range tool, click-drag to select a Range, then pull the volume line up/down as you wish, done.

These are super basic things, really, get the Ripple Training or macProVideo training and learn the app properly, rather than complain you don't understand it. Hey, first time anyone opened legacy FCP, it wasn't that easy to get around.

Computer screens are Progressive. Interlaced footage can look funky on them. NEVER use interlaced footage for the web. Shoot/edit/export progressive video.

Most of the questions here are answered in the user manual in the Help menu or online at help.apple.com.
You could also spend 2 hours one night doing Ripple Training or macProVideo training and be so far ahead of where you are now in your knowledge of X.
These are all the most basic of questions, and most of us here with answers spent the time and money to get proper training.

Point taken. You're all absolutely right. It's just that I thought I'd learn as I went along with a project. I took the basics in the legacy and added more skills as I went along the way. Funny thing is that I've took Izzy's FCPX Training tutorial (26 lessons) and watched that twice and still refer to it. So I know a little bit but apparently not enough. I put a storyline together blazingly fast, but the little itty-bitty things floor me somehow!

Maybe that's not enough or my ears and eyes have sieves in them! I sure as hellfire don't remember any of that. Maybe I should just finish this project in 7 and learn X later. Anyhow, point taken. I'll check out the macProVideo.

EDIT: Checked it out again. Ripple is just too rich for me. $29.00 per lesson???
If I was making money off this, sure. Ten lessons and boom, that's the price of X itself!!!

Izzy is free if watched on youtube or his site and it costs $37 if downloaded.
